corn is planted, mostly

Had the best spring for planting we've had in many years. Planted almost all the corn, and never got stuck or even hit a wet spot. There is 20 acres left Jeff wants to spread some manure on before planting. The only breakdown was a bearing on the blower on the planter. Things went so fast I didn't get time to take many pics. Even had time to work on getting some of the low spots to drain so we have an easier time when it inevitably gets wet again. You can see in the last pic that there was frost on the ground in the shade the first morning.

Forgot that I did have to stop a couple times to remove a clunker from the disc blades. You can tell there are lots of rocks by the rock removal tool tied to the disc.

Wow.... You must be a really rich and successful farmer.... I only had a cedar branch from the edge of the field for my disc.... Someday..... :p

Looking GREAT! How much do you plant total?

Does it damage the discs when rocks get stuck in there like that?

I had the stick with me, just because once in a while one of them would stick full of wet dirt, and it would turn into more of a roller than a disc!

You can break them, but if they are good quality it's rare. This disc came with crap blades and we broke most of them off the first year and had to replace them. No broken ones since then.

It looks like the rock should just pop out, but it doesn't happen like that for me either. I carry a crowbar to pry out rocks. Sometimes I have to break the rock with a large hammer to get it out. Stan

You fellas are way ahead of us this year. I started cultivating yesterday, and should be able to plant some grain today. I will not plant any corn this year myself, and no one around me has started. Really have not seen much done other than some fert, spreading. Winter just hung on hard here,. My road was covered with snow one morning last week. Brrrr. Nice pictures, looks a lot like home to me. I always hated those things. Spent many hours picking those things in my younger days. I thought I had all of them picked here but found two when I worked a pasture to reseed a coupla weeks ago. I tried to get the smaller ones with a manure fork here on the 8 acres.

Was hired out by a neighbor when around 14 years old. Was disking with a SC Case and it started to ball up with wet dirt. Took the crank off the tractor to clean it out. Forget to put it back. Neighbor was very unhappy. He did find it when planting.

Still the occassion snow drift in sheltered spots here. Soil is too wet to work and ground too cold to germinate seed. Not safe to have corn past the two lead stage on the May24 weekend as frost is a common occurance .

Carry a light log chain with you with grab hooks. Wrap chain around the rock, lay out chain by a rear tractor tire or disc tire if its a back gang, stuff what chain you can under the tire and back up over the chain that is laid out, it will pop out even the toughest wedged rocks out.
