Hauling a tractor to northern Montana

We're hauling a tractor on our gooseneck from Pa to Montana. What's the best route to take avoiding the tolls on 80/90 in Ohio & Indiana? I do need to come up through Wisconsin and Minnesota. How's route 2 out in Montana? Any issues using that? Thanks in advance.

I would take US 30 across Ohio and Indiana, just about all 4 lane. Indiana has a slower speed limit than Ohio where I live. I mostly get on from Van Wert Oh west to Decater In. Think would also be good in Ill.

Get up to I-90, no tolls in Minn, SD, WY or Mont. Come up 35 to 90 would be my suggestion. Limit in SD is now 80 except in areas near larger towns. I'd stay off of I-80, the big guys love that road to the coast & there is a lot of heavy truck traffic on I-80 in Iowa & Neb. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

You can also go up I94 from WI through MN and into ND. When you get to Fargo you are about 70 miles south of US2. Interstate is all 75 in ND and 2 is either 65 or 70 IIRC. Either route is pretty easy to get into MT.

I know Highway 2 in eastern Montana was under some pretty heavy construction quite a while back...although I would assume it's better by now. The oil field traffic up and out there is relentless and is hard on all the roads.

Depends on how far west into Montana you need to go before heading north. If you come up I-94 from Wisconsin/Minneapolis to Fargo I'd say keep heading west to Bismarck on 94 and west as far as you need to go. US #2 isn't bad but 94 is a much nicer road and when you get out west you won't run into the oil field traffic on 94 like you would on #2.

30 is a good 4 lane highway across Indiana. Their are a lot of stop lights on 30 and has a ton of stop lights from 421 to the Ill. state line.

Are you planing on going through Chicago,Ill? Their are two major routes running north & south in Chicago. One way is Tri state 294 which is a tollway on the westside of city or I-94 through the city. If you run through the city hit it at the off peak time of the day.

Live in Montana, In-laws in PA, Go back and forth every other year. We take route 30 to I-70. Stay on 70 to Indianapolis, get on I-74 to Davenport IA and then take I-80 to where it intersects with I-29 and get on I-29 North. From there you can go I-90 or I 94 depending on where you are heading in MT. Depending on where you are going in MT Hwy 2 is about your only option for the last stretch. We have found this route to avoid all toll roads, all of it (except parts of hwy 2 and route 30 in PA) are 4 lane free-way and by the time you avoid any traffic near Chicago it is about the same number of hours.

Must be different west of Ft Wayne as east and thru Ohio 30 is interstate quality with no stop lights. Haven't been on 30 west of Ft wayne for years but then there was none on there either. I use a road that is about 30 mile south of 30 now that is straight west from my place.

I live in Ohio and NO WAY will I take I70 in either state, I70 in western Ohio has had the reputation of being the worst road in the state. Us 36 just a few miles north is way better.

You didn't say where in Pa.,but over all Dmiller gave the best routing.Rt.30 is 2 lane lights towns east of Canton Oh,4 lane-lights east of Upper Sandusky Oh. and 4 lane-lights PLUS CHICAGO west of Ft.Wayne.Been 2-3 yrs.ago, but I like 94 better then 90 across Wi. Mn.and ND into Montana with truck-trailer.36 is a good road,BUT NOT USER friendly.
