IH 3414 help

I posted this over on the IH board and got no responses. The IH 3414 has the British 4 cylinder gasoline engine with a Lucas distributor. What is the positioning of the cylinder numbers on the cap? They aren't marked. Also does it rotate CC?

Typical firing order is 1342.

To determine the #1 terminal, pull the #1 plug, turn the engine clockwise by hand while feeling for compression at the plug hole. Align the TDC timing mark, see which terminal the rotor points to.

If you've had the distributor out, just do the above, pick any terminal, reinstall the distributor with the rotor pointing to that terminal. Unless there is an issue with plug wire length or you're going for true factory specs, the engine won't care what terminal you choose, as long as they are in the right order.

That should get you close enough to get it started, then do the final timing adjustment.

To determine the rotation, just hit the starter, watch the rotation direction.
