2005 Dodge 3.7 V6

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty with the Dodge 3.7 V6 (with 85,000) that they also used as the base engine in the full size pickups. Runs OK and gets the usual 20MPG mileage but I have noticed everytime I change the oil (at 3000 miles) I am getting a noticable amount of metal filings in the pan. Not a lot, but enough that when I pour the pan you can see metal debris that has settled to the bottom. Is it normal or is this engine eating a timing chain or timing sprocket(s)? I pointed it out to my son then we changed the oil in my old Farmall 350 (only had about 40 hours but a full year of use) absolutely no metal shavings from the 58 year old engine.

Well, you can immediately get that thing in the shop and fix whatever has gone wrong, or you can find another motor and have it on hand to drop in when this one self destructs...........................sort of a pay now, or pay later situation.

Don't want to be a bad news bear... But it's probably too late. If it's showing glitter in the pan, then it's circulated through the engine already.

Now's the time to start searching the salvage yards. I've had better success with used motors than rebuilt. Trying to overhaul one that's showing unusual symptoms is cost prohibitive.

If it were mine I would investigate is it and interference engine. If so I would get to it sooner rather than later. Guides and tensioners can fail for timing chains causing big problems.
This info is not specific to your 3.7 but general info for those with single row timing chains and OHC or DOHC
engines with guides, tensioners and other related hardware that seems to fail far too quickly.
Have fun.!

Yep ...... run her 'til she blows - Gives you some time to get the replacement engine in hand and your transplant team lined out. 8)

Last guy traded it off to get rid of a problem ?

Wasn't too long ago someone posted about these engines on here. I think theirs was still in warranty ?

Might be hard to find a good 3.7 ? Local guy parts out Dakotas and says to stay away from any with an engine that ends in .7 as they all have bad engines that's how he gets them for body parts.
