O.T. About Bad Language

I have seen some posts about the use of bad language. Many so -called bad words were acceptable to use before Queen Elizabeth, (read the works of Chaucer or Shakespeare). Queen Elizabeth took issue with the subjects using words of the poor, uneducated, working class, or VULGATE people. The queen did not want noble to use such words as they were able to express themselves in Latin. The educated, noble, and professional people used Latin for communication about excrement, reproduction and anatomy while the vulgates used the unacceptable words. The taboo words were rejected by the clergy and continues today.

I am not advocating the use of dirty words of the working people. Harry Truman, a very self educated man and President of the United States had a dirty vocabulary that would have shocked the queen or his own mother, and was an embarrassment to his wife. The moderators may screen the language as they see fit. Bryce uses the language of a tractor mechanic or operator. I doubt if he wears his coat and tie on plow day, He nay even chose to misuse a pronoun or adjective. He uses some vulgar language from the Vulgate people.

Thar were a story aboot Hairy Truman, his wife tried to get him to quit saying manure.
She wanted him to say fertilizer. His mother told her that it took years and years to get him to say manure.

That's the way it happened years ago. "yea!" more or less.

There are enuff words in the english dictionary.to ensure we don't have to swear. I believe people that use bad language are simply ignorant or too lazy to learn our language. There is no excuse for using filthy, demeaning words at any time.. I have to admit to a damn, hell, or sonofab???h ususally when I hit my finger with a hammer or run into a major problem but I have no excuse for it. Also, there is no need to take the name of The Lord our God in vain. Plenty of other words to use.

I agree. I've always felt there was something lacking in me if I was unable to express myself without using profanity.

I have never used the name of the all mighty in vain.
The words god and lord are not names, but titles.
A lot of people don't know the true name of the all mighty and his son.

I was at the Pioneer Power swap meet yesterday. As I walked by three guys I heard the f word three times in one sentence, from I of them. Sounds stupid to me to talk that way. As an American I am supposed to have the right of free speech. If I am going to have it for myself, then I need to support the rights of others to have it as well.

Bad language is trashy and cheap. My first wife worked for a shipping company and it didn't matter if was a longshoreman or the owner of the company She call them down if She heard foul language in the office.

I know it is fairly normal to hear foul language in certain venues. I use it myself more often than I like. I never feel good about it, however, or feel it should be normalized or, worse yet, aspired to. Preferably kept as a form of punctuation when you want to really emphasize something and then only rarely. I resent the implication that, if you are blue collar or don't wear a tie to work, that you are somehow a lower life form and not expected to conform to the standards of society. We need to stop lowering standards. Stop pandering to the kid just because he is a kid. I think he has potential. Slapping his hand when he steps over the line just helps him on the road to life. That is all the moderator was doing in this case.

This is well said! I like him too, but also feel he's been very protected both here and at home. I think he will have a steep learning curve coming up when he moves out into the world unless he learns a few lessons before then. The language thing wasn't any worse than a lot of others, but I didn't care for it either. Better here than out in the world where it can cost a lot more.

Pretty simple, in mixed or unknown company, any language you would not use in front of your Mama, Wife or Daughter should be kept to yourself.

Foul language or cursing is generally used by people with a limited vocabulary that are unable to express themselves otherwise. When I hear that kind of language it is disgusting but I guess one should feel sorry for the person.

I get a laugh out of people using terms like " frick", or " gosh darn it".
Some religious doctrines say that thinking it is as bad as doing it, so if you are going to swear, dont screw around and do it like a Man.
That said, this is not my forum, and I will comply with the rules as best as I can.
Good manners are a set of conventions, that when followed, keep us from killing each other.

Father Ludwig once told our class that swearing isn't what you say, but how you say it. I was golfing with a priest one day and I do not remember what he said, but I do remember the intensity that he said it with. I did not say anything to him about it. I am sure that people think that fricken is acceptable because it isn't the other f word, but everyone understands what their intentions were though. So did they swear? I say they did.

There is a joke about a woman being willing to go to his hotel room for a large amount of money. When he tells her he only has a few dollars, she says "what type of woman do you think I am?" And he replies we have already determine that, we are now just haggling over the price.

Each of us gets to decide who or what we are going to be in this life. And still be respectful of other peoples right to be who they want to be.

But some where we do need to be able to hold people accountable, but how?

"Better here than out in the world where it can cost a lot more. "

This isn't "out in the world"? More than a few young people have discovered that what they post on social networks comes back to them, from potential employers who were not amused.

Something us old coots never had to consider when we were young (and dumb). Depending on context, there are no words I find offensive in themselves.

A recent first-time visitor on my mountain apologized profusely about one word she used to describe our driveway, which clearly impressed her. I merely asked if she really couldn't find a more descriptive adjective.

Not everybody reads literature.

What I found more disturbing than the actual word was that he replied in an offensive mode rather than saying sorry and won't happen again.

Actually, the distinction between vulgar and proper words in the English language dates to the Norman conquest of England in 1066. All vulgar English words have Saxon roots, while their "proper" equivalents are French in origin.

Maybe we should include the word, "citiot " (spelling) as being offensive to some of us on this board. I see it often. Being raised on the farm, having to find my own way of making a living off the farm, I live in the "city". Almost all my friends are farmers, I worked on farmers equipment all my working life so I am somewhat familiar with their trials and tribulations and often come to their defense in conversations. My wife says she very rarely hears me say anything worse than "dirty rubber duck" or "dad gum it". I found out soon in the Army that filthy language was the norm and I never liked it. Still don't. But I still live in the city.

There is a disease where people cuss. I can't recall what its called, but people will be talking normal, next thing you know arms start flailing and they scream or blurt out cuss words, then start talking normal, then another burst of flailing arms and more cuss words, and so on, and so on. It's called something ...burgers or something. I can't for the life of me remember what its called and never figured out why if and when they have bursts of words and flailing arms that its cuss words. I just tried to Google "disease where cuss", but nothing came up. It exists though, but for the life of me I can't remember what its called.

Found it...Tourette Syndrome (TS). One minute are normal, next minute arms are going like a buzzsaw and are screaming cuss words, go back to drinking your glass of milk, next thing....... Has to make life interesting around the dinner table.

I had a neighbor that had that. He went to church, it could be interesting at times.

To me they are just words. I've known people with very high levels of education who use a lot of profanity. The constitution, amendments and bill of rights do not give you the right not to be offended. They do allow me to use words you may find offencesive. In other words spend time looking into your own life and don't try imposing yourself on others.

That goes both ways

Freedom of speech in the Constitutional sense has nothing to do with making a fool out of yourself swearing. It's all about POLITICAL speech, no more, no less. People think free speech means you can stand in your yard swearing at everyone that walks by. Not hardly, not in the Constitutional sense. That part of the 1st Amend is there to protect you when you say an R or D is an idiot. Used to be they'd imprison you for that. In fact, Woodrow Wilson imprisoned over 80K Americans for doing just that in WW1 which lead to the formation of the ACLU.

There's absolutely, positively no good reason to use foul language here or in public. I'm as dirty mouthed as the next guy, but not in the wrong place.

Actually, you have every right to be offended. That's part of natural law, something that the founders considered above and beyond the Constitution and BoR, something that you didn't need to recognize because it was so obvious. But int he time the Constitution and BoR was written if you were offended you either duked it out, duelled or walked away. Manners were considered a sign of your character and those with good character didn't embarrass themselves in front of others acting the fool.

There's not a lot of character going around these days.

I agree but sometimes cussing a guy out will provoke him to fight so that you can get your 'payback' as pain is the only logic some people respond to
