how come my fuel transfer pump on j d tractor works while tightening up then quits once its tight what am I doing wrong

I just bought the tractor Saturday and replaced the fuel pump from john deere today it looked just like the one I took off prime just fine off of tractor but wont prime while on tractor

the old pump works off of the tractor just like the new one but wont work right after it is bolted on

Have you tried turning the engine? The pump cam may be at the highest point and the hand lever can't move the pump.

I'm still suspicious if you got the right pump there. Compare it very carefully with the old one.

no I haven't tried that couldn't get the key to crank the tractor so I have been turning it over from the starter and now I have so munch diesel on starter im afraid to try with screw driver

I will try that tomarrow and see if it works iam new to tractors so im just trying the cheap stuff first thanks for the help

I'll bet Cliff gave the correct answer also. Since ign switch doesn't operate raise metal cover that gearshift handles protrude through. You'll see the neutral safety switch. Try removing some sealing washers then re-install to see if it will now operate correctly?

I think the lift pump arm will only fit on the outside of the camshaft lobe.

turned the engine over and it works fine now im just trying to figure out how to bleed rest of tractor to injectors to try in start it

Loosen inj nuts then turn engine over until air free fuel comes out of line then tighten nuts being CAREFUL to keep fingers away from high pressure spraying diesel.
