Anybody else notice all of the discounting ads on TV? Everything from pickup trucks to John Deere Gators (left over 2014 models). Have also noticed the scrap iron people have stopped showing up at farm auctions. Prices/demand must be down.

This is a good deal if you are planning to buy but does not say much for the economy.

That new disc mower/conditioner I just bought has a $500 rebate. I looked at another one, same brand, but it was a model that had been in production for quite a few years. There was a $1500 rebate on that one. I figured they must be trying to clean up old stock on those.

It's a buyers market for sure. As a buyer I can't say I mind. Picked up a few goodies while the getting is good. It won't last forever. Took some spare scrap steel to the yard the other day, $4/100lb. Kicking myself now as I need the spare sheet metal now but still.

Sometimes that's not all that great a deal. The wife bought new carpet and pad. There was a 25 cents a square foot rebate. When you fill out the paperwork to get it,it says in store credit only, not redeemable for cash.

When I was running my business I fortunately didn't have to worry about new models coming out that would devalue my stock on hand. Stores, dealers, etc. who have new styles models coming out every year, can see their on hand stock depreciate as it sits there, sometimes making it wise to move the stuff at their cost or even below so that they have money to bring new stock in. Many people think that to make a lot of money in business all that you have to do is open the doors, when actually 50% of new businesses fail in what? A year?

I think the economy is still weak and I don't think it would take much to tip us into recession. The rural economy has been ignored and is very weak. I guess we don't vote for the "right" folks.

A local consignment auction last Sat. had more tractors and equipment consigned than he had every had in 26 yrs. doing that sale. He even ask in the on-line ad to save things to the June auction as they were full up. Had over 35 tractors (about a quarter of them should have been scrapped) and equipment in 4 long rows that must have been a 1/4 mile long each. Stuff like I've never seen at that sale in the 5 yrs. I've been attending. Started selling at 10:00 with 4 rings, I got what I wanted and got out about 5:00, they had to have been there selling until dark. Had scrap been a good price that sale would have been more normal size, IMHO.

A few bargains to be had, from what I could tell, but with 4 rings going couldn't watch it all. In addition to a few small items I got a nice new 3 pt. carry-all for $100, a new 3 pt. 4' rock rake for my SCUT for $240 and a 5000 watt portable generator with a Subaru engine for $60, it was like new. I paid over $650 for a new one of the same size at the big box store. The clown helping the auctioneer couldn't get it started so others must have been afraid of it. I knew it would start, have the same issue with mine after it sits for awhile. Got it home and sprayed some carb cleaner in it, choked it, and it fired right up and ran great. With a little more cleaning and oil change and fresh gas I'm good to go.
