hi all, i have a old massey ferguson w6 tractor that i can not get to start now. It used to run fine till the starter went. we had the starter rebuilt and it worked again fine. then one day it would not start, normally we could always pull start it but this wont work now either. any thoughts to help me out? thx

Did you hook the battery back up the way it was before? Old tractors were generally positive ground.

well maybe it is a massey... or it could be a mccormick, but how do you know its a W6 without serial # plate, just curious. sounds like you need a tune up. those w6's start very easy with a hand crank also. you gotta have compression, spark and fuel for it to run. so you have to narrow it down a bit. I hate writing books.

If you can find a way to get some pictures on here then I am sure somebody can help you. As others have said the only W6 I have ever heard of is a McCormick that is the standard tread version of the Farmall M. That should have 5 speeds forward. Also it would be a gas engine tractor, a MF could be either gas or diesel. The Massey Ferguson would have had either 6 or 12 speeds forward. and they would have an adjustable width wheel tread, the McCormick did not as it was not a cultivating tractor as a MF would have been.

does it look like this?

ok now you know what it is. so you can buy the right parts for it now. It has the same engine as a farmall m parts are available and pretty cheap.
first thing is to check and see if it has spark.then fuel. from the little info you gave I suspect the points need cleaned/replaced. thats where I would start anyway.
