back a few years when I was in grade school we always had some sort of science project going and I remember we had some iron filings and put something on top of them -- they would turn all sorts of colors -- I remember that it looked kinda cool but cant remember what we put on the filings to make it do that -- anyone remember what it was?

Dunno, but don't you imagine that was some sort of environmental deadly hazard that was gonna kill us all, somebody has outlawed? I know we used to play with mercury, coat dimes with it, make them slippery. That was fun. Never knew what safety glasses were, then Caroline got acid splashed in her eyes, and the science teacher grabbed her and hauled her under the lab faucet and washed her eyes out. We made bromine one time, tried to see how much we could make, had to turn on all the exhaust fans and evacuate the ground floor of school. Tried to determine the melting point of brass one time, stuck a 22 shell on the end of a glass stir rod and held it over a bunsen burtner.... that didn't turn out well.

In chemistry 101 we had an experiment to cut up a dime and dissolve it with chemicals on an open pitre dish. (No one said anything about the fumes from that!)

One kid didn't listen to the instructions; he put the piece of dime in a test tube, poured in some acid, put a cork in the tube and shook the test tube until it exploded. It left a big black mark on the 12ft ceiling; his hand went numb. Never found a single piece of that glass test tube. Lab was dismissed for the rest of that day's session.
