Ok so, took the super 77 out for a ride today. took it up the road in 6th, everything seemed good. coming back down the hill it started making a banging noise.... like someone hitting the side of the trans with a hammer about 3-5 seconds apart. it never made a sound going up and i havent hurd this noise before so i dont know what to think of it... it doesnt sound good though. you can hear it in all the higher gears 3-6 and when you let off the throttle and the engine acts as a break is the only time you hear it. not when there is a load on it... I changed the fluids in it already and haven't had any problems. I am going to pull the cover off tommrow so what should I check/look for?

Thanks,
Jake

I would think a loose wheel or hub since you say it happens every 3-5 seconds.

That or you have a chipped tooth on a gear inside the transmission.

When it's consistent as you have described it. It means that every time a shaft, gear or axle makes a revolution you hear the noise.

Let us know what you find !!

Jack one rear wheel off the ground at a time, give it a turn in neutral, see if you can feel or hear
anything. I'm thinking a broken spider gear in the differential. About the only thing that would turn that
slow in the transmission.

the pinion shaft could be loose and when you go down hill it will rub on the differential. there is a cover on the front of the trans. case held on by 2 nuts, under that cover is a large nut that holds the pinion shaft in adjustment. these are known the come loose. If you turn the big nut and the shaft moves back and forth, that could be the problem. If it needs to be adjusted first take the nut off and put Loctite on before adjusting it. Chuck
