Rosco P. Coltrane or James Best passed away at the age of 88. I knew he was in many older TV shows well before the Dukes of Hazard. I did not know e was a fine musician and a true southern gentleman. The links below are of James playing guitar on the Andy Griffith show. He is really talented. After reading his bio I wish I had met the man. He seems like a fellow you could have had a real good conversation with.
Best playing New river Train

Best playing more of a CA surfer song

Yep - he was on GUNSMOKE quite a bit in the '60s. R.I.P., James!

Sad to lose another good man. He was a great actor, and he had to be to be such an intelligent man only to play such a stupid character and make said character both likable and believable.

My Lab is actually somewhat named after him. His name is Roscoe Peeeeees on Everything.

I remember that as well. I remember he talked about the "new" Dukes of Hazzard movie when it came out. He said they kind of ruined what the show was about. I agree.

Thru his adoptive parents, he was my 2nd cousin once removed. He grew up in my hometown, graduated from Corydon High School in Corydon, Indiana in 1944, and served on a B-17 during the latter part of WWII. I knew his mom as "Aunt Essa," and she would call my grandmother whenever "her Jimmie" was going to be on TV...and we all made sure to watch him. Lots of westerns, some dramas...

Buzzman,

I am so sorry to hear he passed. I grew up watching him, and I had a great conversation with Ben Jones in Nashville at Cooter's Garage. I got to see one of his original sheriff uniforms in a display case. Ben Jones had so much good to say about him and it actually made me feel like I was a part of a family. I am so sorry and I wish you and your family my deepest condolences. I just hope that you know he and the other actors and actresses influenced and entire generation and was truly a great national treasure.

I just wish that the younger people knew what great actors and great TV was like. Gunsmoke, and the Dukes of Hazzard; it doesnt' matter. it was great TV and it is all lost now.

So glad to see reruns...

God Bless and I hope you know you are so lucky to know him.

I just saw him on an old Bonanza episode. It had to be pretty good television for its day. I also enjoyed him as Jim Lindsey the guitar player on TAGS. Everybody associated with him has had something good to say about him which is rare for an actor. He will be missed.

I really like those clips JD. I will do more digging around the internet tonight.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s, I only knew him as Roscoe, I had no idea he had done so much earlier in his career.

Looks like I will have a lot of youtube videos to watch on a rainy day.

He was real talented, Roscoe P. Coltrain was an by far his best work. However, I hate to be a nit picker, but he is not playing that guitar in those clips. When the camera shows the actual guy playing the guitar, his arms are smooth and not nearly as hairy as the ones belonging to Mr. Best.
