We got PEEPERS! April 1st and it may be the latest I have ever put up this post...and I do it most every year. The Spring Peepers are calling over across the road. Not many. I hope this is not a trend because I don't remember many last year either. Anyway....it's music for the soul, that's for sure.

We're stock piling eggs for when the neighbor calls that the incubator is empty. Might also order some again, like usual Then when they hatch and arrive it's peeper time. :)

We are getting layer chicks in about ten days. 15 of them. The granddaughters can get 15 from a local commercial hatchery for 4H for free but they have to show some of them at the fair in September. This hatchery even has its own section in the chicken barn at the fair. The old buzzards in the chicken house are still doing a fairly respectable job of laying but they aren't going to be laying well in the near future so it's time for them to be replaced. It's an occurrence that can only happen once a year and this is the year.

OK...now this is just silly. There are NO chickens across the road. There are FROGS across the road. Spring Peepers are FROGS. Put this post up every year for many years. I don't think anyone has ever missed my meaning before. Play the link below if you have never heard them. If you grew up around here, it is a harbinger of Spring.

have a 2-3 acre frog pond here
was out there today the ice is still 3 inches thick
was almost the end of April last yr when they started here
should be sooner this yr as we are in for a warm up this next week
last yr we still had snow banks here on the 1st of May

We've had a good bit of rain lately, so there are puddles everywhere. This evening I walked past one in the bottom, and it was full of tadpoles. It seems a bit early to me to see them, but as strange as the weather has been, nothing surprises me anymore.

April first is opening day of trout season here in NY but not what these guys were fishing for yesterday. No peepers here.
