I'm interested in older tractors....not so much the newer ones. But I've wondered for awhile, what is the difference between MFWD/4WD/FWA? Are they all pretty much the same thing?

Generally,anymore,4WD is the accepted term for the articulated tractors. MFWD and FWA used to be different back when they were playing around with hydraulic front wheel assist. Any more,they mean the same thing. MFWD being mechanical front wheel drive and FWA,front wheel assist. If you come across the old hydraulic assist,they refer to them as PFWA or PFWD for power front wheel assist or drive. (Your results may vary.)
MFWD means that a 2 wheel drive tractor is equipped with a shaft driven front drive, Deere offered a HFWD at one time they were a Hydraulic driven front wheel drive, some times referred to as "Assist" (they were not much good) 4X4 can mean the same as above, or mean "articulated",,the articulated 4X4's are the ones that hinge in the middle with large tires on each end,,and yes it can be confusing...hope this helps..

A 4WD tractor is one where all the tires are the same size. It could be a rigid frame or articulated. Rigid 4WD tractors were more common in the past. Nearly all new 4WD tractors made these days are articulated.
MFWD/MFWA are different marketing terms for the same thing: Mechanical Front Wheel Drive/Assist. This describes a "conventional" (i.e. big wheels in back, small wheels in front) tractor with mechanically driven front wheels. In the past it was an afterthought/add-on, but most tractors these days are designed from the get-go for MFWD/MFWA.

For instance nearly all combines today offer optional RWA (rear wheel assist) and are hydraulic drive so not called MRWD.
