Wood Stove Water Coil

Im thinking about putting a water coil in a wood stove to help provide hot water to my house. This will be piped into the water heater. Has any one done this, what kind of temp rise will the water have, and how do I prevent the water heater from getting to hot? Thanks

I had an Earth brand stove years ago that I purchased with water coils in it. It really heated the water. If you are using thermal siphon to move the water from stove to the tank, there are some measurements that are important as to how much higher the tank must be depending upon distance from stove. I also had solar panels at one time to pre heat hot water. The water coils in the stove made the hot water in tank really hot. It needs to have a pop off valve plumbed into the line in case pressure gets too high. I think my hot water tank had a thermostat on it that poped off once but was resettable. Water was definitely hot from tank in the winter.

have new hotshot by american eagle, mn...stainless tube w/instructions, simpler than coils, paid $250, take $200...be blessed, grateful, prepared, nik viet vet

I have a thermo control 500 with stainless steel pipes on both sides and the top inside the stove, it heats the water for the baseboard in the house and is tied in to the oil boiler. water temp is anywhere from 90* stove almost outto 150* when stove is loaded and burning. It's a 50/50 stove 50% of the heat goes in the water and 50% into the air. I burn about 6-8 cords a winter, and about a 1/4 tank of oil. I also really like having a heated basement. If you can do that to your stove, and tie it into your hot water it will help with heating your home. On my system there are 2 circulators, the one for the wood stove has to always be running, or it will blow the pressure relief valve, then I have a 40 gallon hot water not wired in, for a water storage tank. There's alot to it but it works great.,

I've got an Earth wood boiler that is plumbed to preheat my water heater. I works very well but it can get the water too hot. I installed a blend valve that keeps the temp at a safe level for the shower.

Thanks for all the response. I have plans on using a hilkoil and the thermosyphon method. Water will be piped to the pop off and the bottom drain. Can this method of heating water also be used on a closed system with a water heater providing heat to infloor heat?
