appropriate plow for a ford 2N

I have a collection of ferguson plows. 1 bottom ferguson 14 in,
1 bottom ferguson 16 inch, and a 2 bottom ferguson 14 inch. All are complete plows and are 3 point.

My 2 N is in good shape, good tires on the back and they are filled with liquid.

I think the single bottom 14 inch would be the best choice. Ground is very hard and rocky. I like to plow then use my rototiller behind my 1984 john deere 850. 3 cylinder yanmar diesel.

Dad pulled a 2x14 with an 8N in eastern Kansas.Easy 2nd gear. This was in the early 1960s.It was also the first tractor I ever
drove.

Was the ground good in eastern Kansas? I live in NW Washington state and land on our 2 acre piece of property is not good farm land
thanks for the reply

2-14 way too much for a 2N. When Dad bought mine new in may of 44 they brought out a 2-14 with it, after trying to make 2 rounds they loaded up that 14" plow and took it back in and brought out a 2-12" and that worked well, plowed over thousands of acres with it but no longer used as no longer farming. Stick to the single 14" unless you have to plow over 7" deep then try the single 16" and with that you would need to be plowing 8" deep and I figure 13 horse on 12" bottom, 15 on 14" and 20 on a 16" and the 2N is 23 horse, latest 8N was 28 horse.

It really does depend on soil type.
Some guys seem to do ok in lighter soils.
I could not pull 2-14s here with a good running, ballasted 2N but a 1-16 was a good match for it.
I don't think 8Ns had 28 hp. More like 25.

(quoted from post at 11:51:49 03/29/15) Seems like fun to try the smallest first and then try next larger
Yes,
I am trying to learn how to use a plow with my 2 N. My neighbor next door grew up on a farm in the Midwest. They used tag a long plows behind their Minneapolis Moline. He has good knowledge regarding plow adjustment. Thought I would start with the single 14 inch. I have a 8N and the single bottom 16inch was used with it. The person who owned the 8N passed away a long time ago. He told me he found the single 16 was the best combination with his 8N. When I bought his 8N the tires were filled with liquid. I took the liquid out as I use the 8N with a 3 point 5 foot mower

My 41 9 pulls a 2 by 14 just fine. I would try all 3 and see what works best for your ground. Let us know how it works out. joe

I bought the 14 inch ferguson 3 pt. from a person who pulled it with a ford jubilee. A lot of land was plowed with this tractor and plow.
I agree, the 14in is a good place to start

It all depends on soil! The next door neighbor pulled a 2 way, 1 x 16" Case Plow with his Ferguson TO-30. Said that was all it wanted on some of his fields, BUT our soil is THICK, Rocky, LOTS of clay, Hills, etc, etc.

I have a 2 x 16 Ferguson plow that he had that came with the tractor, it hadn't been used in a LONG time! :)

I would start small and go bigger! Personally, I think that it would tug a 16 around. On flat, moderate soil. Those tractors did have a pretty quick 1st gear, I really doubt it would pull 2 x 12-14 UNLESS it was soil that was being turned over and farmed ever year..

HI Joe,

I 'll keep people informed.

It all depends on soil conditions. I have a 9n and use a 2-14. Grandpa had an
8n and used a converted 2 bottom horse plow.
I didn't witness this. But was told a farmer here in town used a 3-14 with his
52 8n. I have no idea how deep he plowed. I saw his 8n on his auction. It was
the most wore out 8n I've ever seen and next to it was a three bottom Dearborn
plow.

(quoted from post at 12:10:43 03/29/15) It should pull the 2 bottom 14 inch plow well my grandfather pulled one behind an 8N for years

I'm just having a good time working with the plows and my 2N. I'll give the 2 x 14 a try but think the ground is too hard. I had the 2 x 14 behind my case320 industrial a long time ago. It has a 3 point eagle hitch. It worked well but the ground was good with few rocks. just small pieces of shale, sand, and dirt. Another friend, now deceased, adjusted the plow for me. It would pull the 2 x 14 in 2nd direct easily. The case 320 is much larger, heavier, and more powerful than my 2N.

The first available plow for the 9N was a two bottom 14". The other models would follow later. The single bottom 16" is a good match for a 9N. No matter which plow you choose, if the coulters are missing like a lot of them are, the plow will be much harder to pull. I'm not even going into worn shares and stuff because we all know how hard it is to pull a plow with worn shares. If you do not have the coulters on the two bottom, I don't think I would attempt it with a 9N. I have a two bottom 14" ferguson with throw away shares, I have a two bottom 12" ferguson with the old style black smith shares and recently bought another two bottom 12" ferguson with throw away shares. I bought the last one to make a single 16" out of it and to use the frog that I remove on my two bottom 14" because I want to make a 3 bottom out of it. I plow with a Ferguson TO-20 with ballast in the wheels. So I am very close to you in weight and power. A few days ago I hooked up the two 12" with throwaway shares and used it. I liked it so much that now I don't want to tear it apart...lol. It is a perfect match for the tractor in my soil here. I used the two 14" for a long time here and did okay with it but sometimes I would have to go to first gear in a clay spot and going slightly uphill. The two 12" I can stay in 2nd gear. I was suprised at the difference in pulling between the two.

Jason, Great information. The coulters are on the plows I have. I have found when plowing with my case 320 that a higher speed results in the furrows turning over better. I keep the backhoe on my case 320 and removed the 3 point eagle hitch and put it in the garage. I am interested in your use of a TO 20. I have a ferguson TE 20 which has continental 4 cylinder overhead valve engine. A great little tractor. You might be interested in our website.
