OT--Selling an item on Craig List

I have bought an sold many items on CL Over the last year I have sold about fifteen chainsaws from my collection.
I now have a John Deere 35EV that is collector quality for sale and I received an eMail through CL inquiring about the chainsaw.
Problem is, he is several hundred miles away and I know nothing about shipping the saw.
He left his phone number and sent me a photo of his JD chainsaw collection. Very impressive if legit.
He asked me how I wanted to be paid and if I could ship.
I know the hassle and problems of doing this, but just wonder how the transaction could be done.
Any advise would be appreciated.

If you have a paypal account you can send a money request . Or he could send you a money
order or check but tell you have to make sure it clears your bank before you ship it

PayPal could be used, but you might get charged a fee...I don't remember for
sure since I haven't used it in a while. I always just tell them to send a
personal check, and I'll ship when it clears the bank. Ship with delivery
confirmation so you can be sure he gets the chainsaw, and he will have a
tracking number for assurance and guarantee you shipped.

I have used pay-pal .. and you know the $$$ is there ... about shipping ... MAKE sure there is NO oil or gas in it ... not even a smell of gas ... shipping gets real messy if there is ...

GO LUCK ............ mark

If your guy sends you money through PayPal. Have him send it as a gift. No fees will be taken out then.

I bought a nice old Stihl farm boss on ebay last year. By the time UPS was done with it the case was cracked and the handle broken. Be sure to pack it well. I had to take a refund but I wanted the saw.

Well on payment you can easily have him mail you a check. Then you wait for it to clear your bank. This can take 5-10 days depending on your and his banks. Then just package it WELL and ship it UPS. There is usually a business in most towns where you can ship UPS if your in a rural area. In larger towns/cites UPS has their own stores. You can figure the shipping cost out online at UPS's site. You will need the weight and dimensions of your package. Then with that and the shipping address you can get the shipping cost. You can have UPS come to your door to pick it up but it usually costs more.

I've shipped chainsaws before and it's no big deal.

Drain all the gas and oil, and wipe it down well. Remove the bar. Wrap the saw with heavy plastic, multiple layers, to contain any oil and smell. Put it in a box with appropriate packing material to protect it during shipment with the bar and chain.

Probably the safest of all ways to be paid is a wire transfer because he has to go into his bank and sign the paper, but that involves giving him your bank account number (which is really no more risky for you than writing a check, but still...).

Several hundred miles isn't a lot. Tell him for $50 you meet him half way and bring cash. Would prolly cost more than that to ship it. You meet face to face maybe make a new friend.

He is closer to a thousand miles, but I wish I could.

I will check on the cost to ship this Monday and just have him send me a personal check, wate for it to clear, and then send package insured. If he is ok with that.

I have had great success asking the buyer to get and send me a USPS Money Order for payment. Very secure, and then you can take it to the
post office and they can verify that it is legit or not and you get paid right there.

Some scammers send fake certified checks now that don't get caught until the bank has had them for a few day and I guess they finally get to the bank it's supposed to be drawn on and find out it's bad. I'm not sure a USPS money order or any paper document/check is a sure thing these days. And Pay-Pal, well, if I'm not mistaken he could go back to them and "open a dispute" claiming you didn't send him the saw or that it wasn't as represented and they'd then return his money and come looking to you to get it back. However, MoneyGram is as best as I can tell is a 100% sure thing. He sends you money--you pick it up and that's that. You got the cash. This is why scammers that want you to send them money always insist on it being sent by Moneygram. Once you send it--it's gone.
