A couple of weeks from planting corn, ya right

I think April 12th is the official earliest corn planting date here, it was in the 20s last couple of nights, with highs in the 30s.

Ground is still solid state here. No way to start any tillage here. Sadly too cold to even start on tractor rrebuild I need to do for this summer's haying... Can't win!

Planted corn mid March last year here in NC. Not this year, low around 26 tonight. Most years I try to get it in the ground before April 1'st. Going to shoot for the end of next week.

When is the last day you can plant corn in your part of NC and still have it covered by crop insurance? Someone will have to help me out here but I think it's around June 5th here in Northwest Iowa. I'm too lazy to look it up in the pages of fine print in my policy.

It's a different world in the cold climate that's for sure, bad enough here in Central Ohio, it was 15 this morning and warmed up to lower 40's, the frost is out of the ground now but it's still wet and cold .. we have planted corn the second week of April before, but not this year. The planters and all the equipment is hooked up and ready, looks like maybe the third week of April could work out, we plant all the 120/115 day corn that we can here..

That's interesting. Here in my part of NWIA a lot of 105 day is planted with a few guys getting brave and planting 110-115. Some of the guys who want to be done harvesting early plant 99 day and sometimes it yields right up there with the 105 day. It all depends on what the temp is like during pollination and what the fall is like.

most of the farmers in south central Va. that I know plant the first week of May or the very last of April.

Pollination time is important to take into consideration, the latter planted corn suffers from the July heat, and that is a main reason to try for mid to early April planting. A couple times we had corn frost off and look dead, but 3/4 days later it came on and didn't seem to affect the yeald..it was in about the 4 leaf stage, and it "did" look bad at the time that's for sure.If a person could do it all in one day we would chose the Fifth of May, but when your doing several acres that is not possible, so we try to start as early as possible and hope for the best, we start planting beans about the same time also we plant 1500 acres of corn and about the same in beans..so that is not near as much as a lot are doing, we run a 16 row planter and a 15" splitter planter for beans,, we are still not in the BTO status ;^),,just a family farm carving out a living...

You're still busy putting 1500 acres of corn through a 16 row. We put 500 acres of corn through a 12 row and about that many beans but this year if everything goes as planned half of the beans will be 15" split row and the other half 30". I'm in the process of putting a ton of electronics on the planter and planter tractor with individual electric row drives and map reading and the works. I sure do hope all of the components communicate with each other. I'm getting into a whole new world here. I have a hunch the alternator on the 4650 will be plenty busy. 2.5 amps per motor X 12 plus air conditioning, lights, Trimble auto steer and whatever else. Whew! We'll see if that Nippondenso is any good. LOL

All chains, shafts and sprockets are still on the planter so if something goes haywire I can throw those motors back in the dealers lap and be planting the old reliable way in about an hour. I haven't paid for them nor will I till after planting is done. I'm cautiously optimistic. LOL

Just be sure to keep a plan "B" on the ready...The thoughts of missing 4-5 good planting days because of a silly un-traceable electronic qlinch are still in my mind from several years ago...
