Another angle on the filter discussion

I have been using Wix/NAPA filters for a long time. Recently I priced, and purchased some Fleetguard filters, as they were very close in price. Whether in a box or not, all the Fleetguard have been sealed in plastic. Most of the Wix are not. If I am going to have to spend $50-$100 for a filter, and it's going on an expensive machine, I like the idea of the filter being sealed from any contamination.

Was at a Menards the other day and they had some oil filters on sale. I thought I might get a few of the Motorcraft/Ford FL500. They were a pretty good price but the problem was the filters were setting on the shelf with no box or plastic wrap. Just the bare filter. Picked several up and looked at them and they were covered with a fine dust around the base gasket and thread area. Needless to say I didn't buy any. Makes you wonder why Menards would allow this to happen. But then I guess they figure a customer buys at their own risk.

The shrink wrap is less expensive for manufacturing and takes less equipment. It is nice looking but for the film to shrink it has small holes punched in it to let the air escape.

yes, that is what I always think too. and the OEM filters are supposed to filter a smaller micron, than jobbers such as 7 micron which is something you cant see with the naked eye.so when I see dust on filters it makes me wonder.

Makes you wonder what happened to the box they were in when shipped from factory. I have a neighbor who had his filters stored on a shelf in his shop, A mud dauber built a nest in one and ruined a combine engine, He found the nest in the filter after he had to tear the engine down.
