Changing the transmission/hydraulic fluid

I was sold hydraulic fluid to replace the fluids for the transmission for a 1952 Ford 8N tractor. I need to know if I was sold the correct fluid and any special tricks to help me accomplish this.

An 8N uses 90 wt oil.Not "hydralic oil. Just pull the plug on the bottom and watch it drain. You need a book(s)!

One thing,, if you put in thin oil you will have a pretty noisy running drive system. Heavy oil quiets things down. Old used car dealer trick too.

If it's just hyd oil and not hyd-transmission oil don't use it. As mention earlier, if it meets the NH 134 spec it's fine.

Since "you were sold" as opposed to purchased the oil, you should check the label closely. It may be UTF or universal transmission fluid, which will be just fine. Actually regular hydraulic will be fine unless you plan to work it for hours at a time pulling a heavy load. You should expect that your 8N's tranny has plenty of sludge on the bottom so take this opportunity to flush it with fuel before refilling. Drive it around for fifteen minutes before draining the current oil to suspend solids. To flush it put the plug back in and pour in a half gallon of fuel then roock it back and forth a few times then drain.

CNH told me the same, 134 oil, in all three compartments of my Jubilee. 134 is the only oil to use in the hydraulics, especially in the winter. However in the tranny it ran out the front tranny seal. I replaced the tranny with 90-140 gl, stopped the major leak.

So use what works for you.

I know a man who used UTF in his 1963 MF35. Like the 8n, one oil for everything. His tranny is leaking oil out the front seal.

Thank you! How much 90wt oil do I need? I ordered the service manual, fyi!

Great info.! Thanks! I am going to go with the 90wt. oil. Do you know how much oil it takes? This was my Dad's favorite 'toy' and it made me lots of $$ when i was young bushogging lots. Dad's gone now but I am going to keep the old girl going!

I have used Universal 134 trans/hyd oil for 30+ years in my 8n. Works much better than 90 wt. when cold. You have 3 drain plugs to remove one on transmission, one on hydraulic pump and one under the differential housing which is a small drain plug. You only need about 4.5 gals. Remove the lowest bolt on the right hand inspection cover (with the dipstick) and when oil starts to come out its full.

A quick google search will find real N series manuals from Ford. What are your plans for this tracror ?

I would not use 90wt if you gave it to me and changed it out for free... I have used 134 with no issues only because I had live hydraulics on that N... If 134 causes a noise you have issues that did not come from 134.. I would run run 80/90 its the best all around lube but if you own a wanna be euro spots car maybe not...
