Hello my grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's 3 years ago. I live on 160 acre hobby farm that without him was left it to me to maintain until I go to college. I'm having no luck with his caseih 1494. It runs amazing. When it decides to start. My question is is there a glow plug setting on the key switch or a button somewhere that kicks them on. It's hard starting In 50 and impossible at 40. I think the block heater needs to be replaced but it should still start easy at 50. He was one of those people that when he was still getting around I wasn't even allowed to look at the tractor straight so he never took the time to sj

The "Thermostart" is on in the position that is halfway between run and start. You have to hold the key there.

Something else may be wrong as my worn out 1494 will start with 20 seconds of cranking, at 20F, without the glow plug.

Half way between if you turn it clockwise? No thermostart if you turn it counter clockwise? That's how my Oliver Fiat built is.

Tractor runs good once its started. It sat for the last 15 year. I put about 150hrs on it last year but it could still be being broken in from the sit. It only has 800 hrs. When I try to start it cold it smokes out our barn so I imagine the engines just to cold to catch

No, thermostart is between run and start on a DB.

Another thing to help it start easier is to turn the timing advance screw in on the bottom of the injector pump. Looks like a little T handle on the IP. Good luck.
