Source for PTO V belt pulley

I've got a woods mower deck that I want to hang under my John Deere M, but the V belt pulley that it came with (bought used) is way too big to fit under the seat/hydraulic box. I'd have to measure closely, but there's room for a 8-9 inch diameter pulley. I think Woods sells the pulleys for $200 or so, but is there a more affordable source for these that will fit on a standard 1 3/8 PTO?

Most any good farm and home place has pullies that you can buy in many sizes then you weld a center to them that fits the PTO. I have done that many times over the years and cost is around $25

Find an ag store that has Weld-a-Sprockets. They would have a hub(possibly a quick attach hub) to match your splines and a pulley to weld on the hub. A hydraulic shop may also have what you need.

Have you checked to see what the correct pulley for your application is? You may be able to find a splined hub, and the correct pulley, in a wedge type so that when you tighten the bolts the hub is locked on the shaft.

The wedge/clamp type pulley is what came with the mower, I think all the woods were that way. I was just looking at the TSC website, haven't seen any of those yet, all weld on

I buy alot of my stuff like that from ebay. Problem with that you need to know just what size you want. find a pulley with a taper lock center that way just buy the pulley from ebay, and buy the correct taper lock center from a bearing supplier for the shaft size. Stan

The mower will not be turning nearly fast enough to be useful with only an 8-9" pulley on a standard 540RPM PTO.

You need about a 21" pulley to get the mower blades spinning fast enough to cut grass.

mkirsch is right, mower is going to be about half rpm and the smaller arc of contact may limit the horse power delivered due to slippage otherwise it will require higher tensioning. IaLeo

Better look up that mower for your tractor to see what size pulley you need like other posts have said 8 or9 will never turn the blades fast enough to mow anything you have to have a big one on the PTO to get blade speeds

Try McMaster Carr they have what you'll need. If it were me I think I would make a small jack shaft to fit the pto that would extend out the back far enough to clear the tractor then put your pulley on the jack shaft. If not go to any Equipment dealer and tell them you want to mount the mower on your tractor and they will order you what you need or at least you could get prices.
Neat stuff

There is an industrial supply type store in town here, and I'm sure some farm equipment dealers as well, where the taper lock type stuff is available. But as has been mentioned, the important thing is to find out what size pulley is appropriate for your application. Typically the smaller pulley you're talking about is run off what was originally a belt pulley shaft.- Turns much faster than a 540 PTO.

My Farmall A has a 12 inch pulley on the 540 pto for a woods mower. You may have to change the size of the pulleys on the spindles.

I went out and measured, it'd fit a 11 inch pulley, possibly 12. I've seen Ms with these Woods mowers, so I know it's possible. Thanks for all the pointers so far I hope I can find something that'll work.

On a tractor with a rear belt pulley you put about a 10 inch V- belt pulley on that shaft, it turns a lot faster than the PTO. We have a Farmall C set up like that.

We had an AC model B with a woods mower. The drive pulley for it mounted on the shaft where the the flat belt pulley went. Does your JD M have a flat pulley on the rear like our AC B? I think the pulley shaft turned faster than the PTO.

Your pulley on the A runs of the belt pulley drive as the 12in on the pto will not run a mower and the 12in on the pto would hit the fender something is wrong someplace as belley mowers on an A usualy run from belt pulley rite under the seat.
