International 284 wet brake

My very wonderful 87 year old Neighbor has a problem with the driveline brake on his 284, has had it apart cleaned and working but it leaks fluid from the chamber, when he first got it there was water in the hydraulic system, he is wondering if water could possibly have got into the chamber, frozen and caused a hairline crack in the chamber, has anyone else
had such a problem? T
his Gentleman is one of the finest Mechanics I've ever known, he's stumped, so if anyone could help, I'd sure appreciate it, thanks, and thanks for letting me join the Forum ! Dan Carroll, Jr. Highland, MD (In a previous Lifetime I was a Mercury Marine Master Technician)

I don't know anything about the brake problem but I have family here that is
third generation Mercury dealers. My cousin runs it now. My other uncle was
Merc tech for years now services boats on his own. Were in NNY on the mighty
St. Lawrence river. Welcome to the forum theres a great bunch of people here.
There is forum further down dedicated to IH and Farm all. You might find a
better answer there.

My rule of thumb has always been if you take it apart the 3rd time to stop a leak it's not the gasket or O-ring that's leaking it's usually
the casting. Just my experience from the last 37 years.

John , thank you for your reply, I'm guessing that you have actually seen them leak through the casting, does not necessarily have to be an actual crack, if so how did you seal it ? An epoxy paint or coating ? Sure do appreciate your help !

Brendon, I worked a couple of miles from the Chesapeake Bay on South River, not far from Annapolis, MD. Home of the United States Naval Academy. I found it a tough but satisfying way to make a living, my Family situation took me away from the Bay and into a whole bunch of new occupations, I have kept on turning wrenches over the years though, mostly on my own Motorcycles & Cars. Have always thought Mercury Marine was an AMAZING Company.
