My wife's computer has started getting 50 or more spam messages per day in her Yahoo email.

Does anyone have any idea how to block these?

Someone has harvested her email address, and sold it to a multitude of spammers. Isn't much you can do other than to mark those emails as junk, and then delete.

I know A LOT of folks who have had their Yahoo accounts highjacked.

I'd set up a new Gmail account... she can keep her old address - but it will just end in gmail .com (for ease of her and your family and friends remembering it). That's what my sister did.

instead of deleting use spam button or unsubscribe to each one, the worst thing you can do is open it it lets them know it as an active email account. Better yet get another email address aol, gmail or the like almost anything is better than yahoo in filtering spam.

I have been working in the computer industry for just over 25 years. I had a yahoo account at one time. Like yours it got hijacked and got about 100-200 spam mails per day.

There is not much you can do with yahoo mail as their security is bad.

I setup a GMAIL account and have not had any issues.

My suggestion would be to setup a new GMAIL account then send out an email to everyone in your contact list from the yahoo account to start using the new GMAIL account and never log back into the yahoo account again.

I have a gmail... LOVE it.. Nice and simple to use. And it has categories, like Personal, Business, etc. So I can put all of my work/jobs/contact stuff in Business and all my other junk in personal.. Really good with spam too!!

I have had a Yahoo Email account for over 20 years. If you mark the ones as spam and never open them, eventually you won't get many spam emails. I probably get 2 to 4 a day. Also depends on what all websites you are going to.
I get as much spam on my Gmail account as I do on Yahoo, and the only reason I have G Mail is for my Android phone.

Thanks for the replies! My wife is a bit naïve as to the web sites she surfs, and who she gives her email address out to. Her email address needs to be simplified anyway. Maybe this will be a learning experience for her.

I also had yahoo for a lot of years and went to Gmail. I get maybe one spam a week if that. One thing I did find out is to never ever open emails that are forward from someones friends to you. These are the greatest danger to your computer being over taken and make sure your wife has malware protection.

They are getting more sophisticated every day about getting past the blocks you can put up. I get about 50 or more every day that are automatically thrown into the junk but always get several more that I have to add to blocked list. Some I block sender, some senders domain. Next day, same junk. I do a lot of web searching and wife does too. I tell her to be careful but if you can't check things out what good is the web. I think the server should do a better job of blocking this stuff. There are sites to instruct you how to get around being blocked and so it goes. Have thought of changing e-mail address but haven't yet.

Goose, my wife is similar. She uses gmail and gets 50 spams to every one I get with yahoo. Yahoo isn't as reliable as it once was, but for spam no worse than anybody else. That's dependent on how you spread your address around. Very rare a spam gets into my Inbox, yahoo filter works well. Filling up a Spambox means you were injudicious with registrations around the web.

Suggestions you read here about spam work, just delete them and eventually the rate slows. I almost sent a brokerage account to a different company, until I read their privacy policy. There is no privacy there, they will share information with anyone they like. Spam City. I found another broker that doesn't do that, at least for now.

I second the suggestion to use gmail.

However, suggest that she keep the yahoo email address and give it out to any stupid website that asks for it (all those confirmations, special offers, etc), do not give the gmail address. Let them spam away at yahoo. I have one and very rarely log into it; none of my real contacts know it exists.

Not a computer expert but well versed in dealing with spam...

Just register for a new email account and abandon the old one. It takes about 3 minutes to make a new account, you spend way more time than that wading through 50 spam emails. Why waste your life fighting spam when you can leave it behind for a nice new, clean email account?

After your wife gets a new account set up, teach her a better way to go about things. Set up an additional account just for website signups. Thats the only time you use that account, sign up on a website and go right to it to get your login information, it will be right on top. Then dont use the account till next time you sign up for something.

Same with craigslist, set up an account for that. If you contact somebody to buy something, use that account. If you sell something, list it using that account and never worry about the dreaded spammer. If you start getting spam, just make a new account.

Your life will be much easier if you make some small adjustments like above to avoid spam AND keep it from controlling your life. You cant stop spam but you can easily avoid it.
