Last fall I found an M for sale or could be a Super M. Pretty rusted tin to see any decals .Someone told me to count the starter bolts because a super has 3 and a regular has 2 . Who on this forum would know if that's true before I go looking at it this spring. It's just like my olie I bought , the owner said it was a standard 88 , but I knew it was a super and got a big bonus.

Thanks

There should be a steel tag rivited on the tranny, I think it is, that will specify the model. Ill have to look at mine tomorrow.

(quoted from post at 21:00:31 03/22/15) Whats the serial# as not all SM had three bolt start.
sn't the Torque Amplifier a huge tell? Well, maybe not, if the Super M could be has with or without the TA. Somebody knows...speak up, please.

I saw it from the road under a pole barn and didn't approach the owner yet . I know he is an older gentleman and don't want to start looking for #'s etc . If I could just tell what it is, at kinda a glance by identifying a few things it would help me alot .
I don't want to start an argument on this site between you folks trying to identify it .

Thanks in advance -- Larry

Brakes and nose cone are different between the M and the SM. However very late M's had the SM brakes and they're all 60+ years old, a lot of parts may have been changed over the years.

Disk brakes will be the dead giveaway. A Stage 1 SM will still have a two bolt starter. A Stage 2 SM may or may not have live hydraulics, thus the brake thing.

Look up "Super M" with Google images and pay attention to the brakes. Note that there are aftermarket disk brakes on some regular M's. They were made by Lambert but do not look like the factory ones on a SM.

It's true that a very late production regular M could have the disk brakes but these are not common. Once you get close to the tractor you can look at the tag for "SM" and the serial number. Also "264" will be cast into the block in the upper left corner on the distributor side.

Here's a stage 1 early 1953, disk brakes, 2 bolt starter, think the grille is the same until 54 SMTA.

look at the serial # tag... it will tell you. there will be an S in front of the serial # for super.
