another crude oil train on fire

Just turned the news on, think it said 103 car train by Galena IL. next to the Mississippi, don't know how many cars are on fire. That's pretty desolate country to be fighting fires down next to the river.

You did have (and still do have) a pipeline in Michigan, Randy, and they are still trying to suck oil out of the Kalamazoo River....I think that spill happened 3 years ago!!

Its been over 5 years I was running freight in that area at the time it happened and I have been retired almost 5 years.

Pipeline leaks are spectacular, but rare. Statistically transporting by pipeline is safer. Maybe that's why the president veto9ed the Keystone Pipeline, because he really doesn't care about the environment, just his political reputation.

Follow the money and you will see why we don't have a pipeline,it has little to do with the environment and more to do with who's making the money from shipping by rail, last I heard they were getting $35.00 a barrel by rail, the pipeline would take that away from Warren and his cronies. We've had pipelines out West for decades with no major problems and now it's a political football with money attached to a certain party to fight it.Follow The Money!

Rockefeller started with the pipelines so he wouldn't get overcharged by the railroads, of course his idea of being overcharged was paying the same as everyone else.

As Paul from MI mentioned, pipelines are safer. Colonial pipeline runs through Greensboro,N.C. and I have never heard of any major problems. They have a "tank farm" near the airport that stores hundreds of thousands of gallons petroleum products, and the only thing recently was in 2010 when lightening hit a tank and it burned, but no other damage.
I'm beginning to feel a little suspicious that just maybe the pipeline supporters could be behind some of these train fires. Hmmmm? "Naahhhh."

Most people believe that John D. Rockefeller was some kind of robber baron because that is what the jealous, progressive media portrayed him as at the time. The truth is he was an incredibly hardworking and astute businessman who created untold wealth and jobs while bettering the lives of millions of people with affordable oil products. He gave away billions of dollars to charity over the course of his life and died at 97 with a small fraction of his fortune remaining. The USA could use several thousand like him right now.

here it is, 8 cars out of 105

But Buffet is on record of wanting the Keystone XL pipeline! He and Gates own the tanker car company too, so not sure why he endorsed the pipeline, but he did!

As bad as oil trainwrecks are, how many have died or been maimed by them in this country vs. the carnage of young Americans in the wars in the mideast?

I think Buffet's thinking is the pipeline goes to one maybe two places. A lot of oil will still move by rail which can be laid down quickly to specific locations.
There already is a Keystone pipeline. The Keystone XL would to up into Alberta for the tar sand oil which is bituminus in nature. This line would then connect into existing pipeline. If I am wrong please correct me.

Canada upgraded their tanker car standards several years ago, the US did not. Did US railroads buy up all those substandard rail cars from Canada?

You aren't supposed to bring facts like that up. Upsets the progressives and things go poof. It would be akin to mentioning JP Morgan bailed out the US gov't TWICE. People aren't supposed to know about stuff like that.

"Following the money" has the sound of being in the know and being more "aware" than the average person, but in reality the money is ALWAYS flowing in both directions. The people applying the money are ALWAYS astute business people, and NEVER apply a dime more than it takes. Thus the net flow is actually almost always minuscule.

Aint rocket science boys,we need to supply europe
with oil,get europe off russian oil, how do you do
that you ask? KESTONE XL pipeline !Otherwise

hostile putin,.....just my spin from the great

You'll form a different opinion when you see the documentary that was on PBS, that told the real story about how he destroyed a neighborhood of thousands of people, how he did it and what became of those displaced. He was no different than the dishonorable, corrupt and self serving politicians we have today. Look up the south mall, now the empire state plaza, corning tower, which is ironically named after the mayor at the time who publicly resisted what he did, behind the scenes he was likely on the same page. Very interesting story and the people finally got it told via a television documentary. He destroyed hundreds of business's and displaced 9000 people if I recall the numbers correctly.

My bad.... that was Nelson Rockefeller..... sheesh .... up too late, whenever I hear this name I always think of this.... but they are 2 completely different people... LOL.....

Still an interesting and entirely sad story though.

Don't know where you heard that. According to congressional research, in Feb. it was $5.00 per barrel by pipeline and $10.00-$15.00 per barrel by rail.

A pipeline is a two edged sword, I really do not know what farmers WANT a pipeline through their place. It disturbs the soil for several years and limits depths you can work up soil forever.

I work on the controls for several pipeline companies and believe they are very safe. A train is much riskier.

I also believe there is very little for the US in the Keystone pipeline, it is for Canada. I am concerned that the US will drop the ban on crude oil exports.

Publically he says he's in favor of it..........................................

Anybody but me noticed the increase in train wrecks the last few years?

But, but, ..terrorism is dead............there is no terrorism............

exactly.

ONLY political.

same reason he's talking to iran. .. which even on his side doesn't make too much sence... unless you follow the $ there too...???

I was thinking about last night, saw a map of the route of the train that crashed out east somewhere about a month ago, came through Wisconsin and Chicago headed east. About the same time I think one lost a few cars of oil into the Mississippi above Dubuque on the Wisconsin side of the river and then the fire last night 45 miles west of me. I never did like setting at a crossing watching the spikes go up and down.

Supposedly these are the new style tank cars that are meant to be safer. Looks like it's back to the drawing board for whoever engineered them!!

I saw that on the news this morning, new and improved tank cars, 4 years old I think they said.

Billy, documentaries are told from one perspective in most cases. I've yet to see a really balanced documentary on anything I have any knowledge of. PBS has produced some terribly unfair documentaries over the years and has aired some that were darn near criminal. Take what you see on TV and do some research yourself. If there's any political angle, and there always is, then only half the story will be told at best.
