JD 630 vs 620

What differences are there between a John Deere 620 and 630 other than sheet metal? I've heard that the three point is different--different range of motion or something like that. Is that true? Is the hydraulic pressure the same? I have always preferred the look of the 20 series but have heard that they're less practical. Is there any basis for this? Thanks.

Other than a few detail changes there is no difference between the two. They are mechanically practically the same tractor. Mike

The one thing I like is that the steering shaft is under the hood and you can take the hood off and leave the steering and fuel tank on the tractor. Can't think of anything other than this. chris

The black dash 620 and the 630 are for the most part identical.

One of each on the farm. Black dash model 620
& late 630.. Dash is easier to read in the 630
& that's about it. @ our place the 620 gets used
more & it doesn't matter who's using it...

Yes they are the same on the 620 & 630 both have/had a standard category II 3 point available as an option.

I suspect someone told you wrong they maybe were comparing an older model 60 tractor to the 620 & 630.

A model 60 is different.

Thank you. I appreciate you clearing this up. Do you notice any difference in the lifting power between the two--either the hydraulics or the 3 point?

I have a 1944 A, and its hydraulics are really wimpy. I bought an after market 3-point for it, and it can't lift the cultivator or the even little 3 point sprayer. I would like to cultivate with the narrow front and lighter tractor, but the A's not gonna do it with that cultivator anyway. I'd like to get a 620, but I want to be sure that it has more grunt before I do.

You will be pleased with a 620 !!!! They will easily lift a large round bale on the 3 pt. For real heavy loads you may need some front end weights ?
On your old A have you tested the hyd. pressure ? there not much but can also be shimmed up some safely and more not so safely. I know a fellow who has a rear mounted forklift mast on his A and he has the square rockshaft twisted.

To me the 620 still looks like a typical styled two cylinder John Deere tractor while the 630 looks like crossbreed between a John Deere and some semi-rare streamlined Harry Lowther built thing like a 6 cylinder Wards or Rockol.....just don't like 'em! JMHO ya understand...

Ha ha! Yeah, me too. I think the styled letter series is the prettiest design Deere ever made, and they've gone down hill ever since. The 20 series is closer to that than the 30s.

But because of the 30's steering column, the steering wheel is more horizontal and hits you in the thigh when you want to stand up. The vertical wheel of the 20s is more suited to standing and driving, which I think is important for resting your back or just changing position for awhile. Our 730 is a awkward to stand and drive, while my A is good, though it has a metal seat, which leaves more foot room too. I guess the trade off is the difficulty removing the hood, but you only do that once in awhile vs wanting to stand up every time you run the tractor for any length of time.

I haven 't tested the hydraulic pressure. I don't know how, really. I took the 3 point off from it anyway; it was a pain to get on and off the tractor with it on there. Plus it looked bad. A's are supposed to be rear mounted tractors, which I like for most things. I think in the next round I'll get a 620 and not worry about the A for that. That A is such a handy tractor, but I shouldn't ask it to do things it wasn't meant to do. That just isn't considerate.

For use as a planter tractor I like the vertical steering wheel on the 620, 60 and A. When I'm sitting there staring straight ahead all day long the position just seems to fit me. For loader work or other work where I'm turning around in the seat to look around the slanted wheel on the 630 works better for me.
