Rough Cut Lumber Costs

Do any of you gentlemen know what you are paying per board foot of rough cut pine? I am building a small loft in NW PA and estimating costs. Thanks.

When I had pine to sell it was 40 cents per BF. I saw someone near Lowville NY had it for 35 cents last year on Craigslist. I think it is pretty regional.

I used to drive 50 miles to a sawmill who would sell me rough cut oak. That ran around $4-5 depending on grade and thickness. Local mills don't want to sell to the small guy and they only cut hard woods.

I recently found a guy who has his own sawmill. He is the only person who will take logs out of a yard and turn them into boards. I think he charges about a buck per ft to cut. I just tell him to give me some of the wood when he is done. I now have tulip popular and red oak drying and it basically free. I plan to have another oak taken down soon. He will pick up the log from my yard, he only a few miles away.

He only cuts good wood and I've paid him around half price, $3 per ft. Keep in mind this isn't construction grade wood. I don't think he even cuts pine or soft woods unless you bring him the log.

I think it would be cheaper and faster using OSB for decking.

My dad used to take his logs to mill and get shares. I hated working with wet ruff cut stuff.

Was this an Amish outfit? There are a number of Amish cutters in the area and I would imagine they would undercut the ordinary Joe miller.

In Mass. I pay .53 board foot if I use their wood ... think it's around .35 if I supply my own logs.. I forget exactly. maybe even less, it might be .27 bd/ft just haven't done it in so long.

Not sure whether or not those are "friend prices", I never asked, but I don't think so.

Upstate NY. .50 per bf for pine/hemlock, .60 for larch, couple years ago a guy charged .28 using his mill @ my place with my logs.

I don't see many Amish folks on Craigslist as a rule. There is a company that claims to sell Amish made sheds, but that is it. This appeared to be a regular person. Last I knew the Amish around here were getting 45 or 50 cents for hemlock but that was a few years ago. I don't keep up with it because I don't have to buy it now that we have a sawmill.

You can go to the 'forestryforum' and search in the 'extras' tab to find guys in your area that have small bandmills and possibly a source for what you are after.

About any sawmill in NY would have rough cut pine or hemlock. It's about the only rough cut soft wood you will find in northern NY.

I have bought some from the amish at Arthur, IL for a good price. The measurments are varied unless you specify, white oak not seasoned.

Mark, There are several Amish mills in Mercer and Crawford counties. Mills near Atlantic, Jackson Center, New Wilmington. Hemlock is their thing. We've paid from 40 to 50 cents; rebuilt barn and sheds near Grove City. I found them square to deal with.

I make some.

My dad had an old 4 ft sawmill. How do you power yours? My dad rigged up 2 3 phase motors to power his. He first used an old case tractor with flat belt. Tractor used too much fuel and he wanted a constant speed or his blade would flex on him.

I think you must be in different state with locations of same name. Mercer county next one west of me with no mills, just a few Amish familys, cross state line and hundreds of Amish families. Think there is a Crawford county but not sure where, Jackson Center is 7 mile southeast of me and where the Airstream travel tralers are made, No Amish in Shelby county where Jackson Center is located. I think a Grove City close to Columbus, Ohio I am in northwestern Ohio and deal with Amish in both Ohio and Indiana on a regular bassis. No hemlock around.

Leroy, Mark W noted he was in NE Pa; that is where we're located. Across the Ohio/Pa stateline; yes many Amish here too and Crawford and Warren counties have lots of hemlock.
