Trip to Dallas

Was In Dallas all week on business flew home to St. Louis Friday night only to find the snow is following me supposed to get 6 or 7 inches here. I realize you guys don't get a lot of winter weather but I was surprised to see road crews spreading sand. Is it mixed with salt? Didn't seem like there was enough sleet/snow to need a plow as the highways were pretty clear but the bridges and overpasses were teriable. Why don't they use a salt or brine mixture? Are there regulations aginst it or just not enough winter weather to warrant buying and storing it? I didn't get to see much of the city this trip, but I've got 3 more trips to make to the Dallas Fort Worth area this spring. Maybe I'll get to sight see then.

One factor is the hundreds of miles of elevated roadways and ramps then just a drizzle and barely freezing temps and its bumper cars in a hurry. You'll never guess the first thing a lot of them do when they realize there's ice under them.

Overpasses only, yes some salt, how much? Yes not enough to warrant a big effort including no snow plows that I know of and have been a life long, born and reared Texan except for the time the guy with the long, white beard called.

If temps are in the high 20s or low 30s all you need to do the job is a little salt. With the cost of salt they mix it with sand. Also salt will eat concrete on the bridges.
Another reason to use sand is it dose give better traction.
