I'm cleaning a farmstead up and there is this van which I figured it would have a 283 or 327 that I was going to save. But cleaned it out enough to access the engine to find what looks like a pontiac/olds engine to me in it. Can anyone confirm this or seen one to have a non chevy engine. It has the distributor shoved down in between the waterpump and front of the engine. thanks chris

Post a picture of the engine. Mainly the front water pump distributer area. What color is the engine ? Where are you located ?

Take a look at the engines in this test... I don't recall any GM's with the distributor up front...

If you don't see it there, there is also a Test #2.

Big block Mopar has front dist on rt. side and protrudes at an angle towards passenger side. Small block Ford (maybe big also) has dist pretty much centered in front. Late '60,s and '70,s buick (340/350/400/455 had front dist on an angle towards driver side. '70,s caddy had front dist. late '60,s and 70,s AMC had front dist. Need pics !

Unless it is a transplant someone has put in, or not a 67 Chevy, it should have had a Chevy engine, and most popular v8 Chevy in those would have indeed been the 283 or 327 (no 350 till 68, which replaced the 327, and 307 replaced 283 then). There were many 6 cyl vans, but sounds like it is indeed a v8. I cannot off had recall when they started with the "corporate" engine deal where they placed Olds, Pontiac, and Chevy in other brands, but pretty sure it it was much later. Could it be a GMC? Not sure what engines they put in the GMC vans.

The van is located between Clarkson and Stanton Nebraska. Sorry can't post pics not smart enough or have never tried. chris

Somebody must of been crazy to transplant that engine in there no room. If I remember right the distributor angles to the driver and the oil fill to the passenger side. I have seen a pontiac engine in a 68 chevy c10 but can tell it was a transplant from long ago. Might try the picture this weekend. chris

Its gotta be one of the engines Randy describes. Having the distributor angled as described eliminates Ford engines, any Chyrsler/AMC engine would require a different trans as well, whereas a Buick or Cadillac engine would bolt up to a dual bolt pattern TH350 Th400 trans. which could be the original.
