went to pick up a couple gallons of ih red paint at the local carquest, they have a line of paint for various makes of farm tractors which is less expensive than their auto paint, they have changed their paint brands, now its krylon, ok krylon makes good paint, or so i thought, but , this paint now is water based, i opened the can back at the farm and it wasnt ih red,way to brown, i went ahead and mixed it as directed and sprayed some, as i know some paints change color a little as they dry, it is more like a flat case backhoe brown! the truck i was painting was ih red, i know this because several years ago i personally painted it ih red, i went back and had them open the ford red, it was violet, the massy red was a lighter brown, had to have them mix up some"real" paint, for the truck, 287.00 a gallon!

I took the fenders, grille and hood from my Oliver 500 to a body shop to have them straightened and painted. He said the paint for that would be about $200. He said that wasn't the real high dollar stuff, but it was good paint that would last.

$287.00 is cheap for a gallon of red. The red that is on my Nissan is $93.00 a pint in Diamont. The last Concept urethane I bought to spray on a VW was over $200.00 a quart.

I go along with Jason.

My F150 is Red Candy.Friend of mine wanted to paint a motorcycle tank the same color.Went to Napa and a local paint store.$285.00 a quart. Both places also said it needed a special clear that was $75.00 a quart.

$287.00 sounds cheap to me.

I get sticker shock every time I buy automotive paint, anymore.

A few years ago, I worked on a Dodge Daytona. The paint was metallic, either blue or purple depending on how the light hit it. The paint had 9 components. All I needed was a pint to redo some plastic cladding on one of the doors, plus some touchup, but that pint was almost $300.

Reds and blues are the highest priced colors, with browns and earth tones the cheapest.

Not sure whats the deal with there color match. But I will say that about 9 years ago the company I work for got a contract to do rolloff dumpsters for a company that wanted them painted with there distinct color, and specified a waterborn paint that we had to use. We all laughed at it and figured it would be like cheap house paint in durability, it was cheap like 90 bucks for a 5 gal pail. It sprayed on nice, cleaned up easy with water, and we figured it would practicaly wash off in the rain after a couple years. Well what a surprise we had, the contract long since folded up but the dumpsters and other things we painted with the extra paint still look great. Its a very tough durable paint, the world is changing and not everything enviro friendly is poor quality nowdays. As for tractor paints, im partial to JD paints, ie Valspar, they hold up well and very available and reasonably priced. Just painted my dodge pickup with JD charcoal gray last fall and it looks great and is a close match to the original at a fraction the price.

I have heard good reports about the Southern Polyurethanes, Inc. I have not tried them yet but when I get my Mustang closer to primer and paint, I will be giving them a call.

My cousin recently started carrying SPI products in his shop. I haven't used a lot of their stuff but I can say their epoxy primer I used was very good. Their clear is some of the finest in the world.

I feel your pain on the color shift paint. I owned a 1996 Ford emerald mystic Cobra Mustang. Ford built 1,999 of them with that color and no more. The kicker was Ford owned that color. BASF was the only company that could mix it. If you needed any paint for repair you had to take your car and let a BASF rep look at it and verify that it was a true emerald mystic cobra. They would then mix enough paint for your repair and if there was any paint left, they took it back. Even though you paid for it, you wasn't allowed to keep it. The color shift paint was over $400.00 a pint back then. I would hate to know what it cost now.

Krylon is now a Sherwin Williams product. They make more than the old shake and shoot paints. The waters are real different animals. Many need to be clear coated to hold up most of the time, but not all and do dry down a different color after the water, alcohol, and glycol leaves. If you think it is way off (and it could be)take it back and request a spray-out. That will tell the story.

IH2150 is still sold at the CaseIH dealer, is every bit as good as Krylon, if not better, is way less than $287 a gallon, and is actually RED!

From what krylon paint I had I call it CRY ON as you will be cryingaboyt the finnish as lond as you have it on the item you painted with it. Will never buy any again. Have had some here for years that I do not know how to get rid of as I will never use it.
