Tire chain question

I just bought an old Case 430 and the tires aren't great. They are pretty much worn down and cracked and torn and basically a ticking time bomb waiting to go. BUT I am going to run with it until one of them goes. I luckily found another set of 14.9-28 tires and rims that came off of a Case 530 and they are in great shape so I can just swap them out when I need to. I am only using the tractor in the nicer months to clear some land and bushhog.

My question though is between duo grip chains and double ring ones. For dirt and field work (I might snow plow eventually) is one better than another? I was thinking that the duo grip would be better on tires with some tread? (like my new ones)

Here are the chains:

It sounds as if you are asking if either would be better for dirt and field work, more than snow/ice/mud etc?

Most around here only run them in the winter, either will provide good traction, given neither should settle in between the lugs on ag tires. I would think the duo-grip would ride better, double ring not so good on pavement or hard surfaces. They are great (dbl. ring) on hard packed snow/ice, shed mud off etc. I prefer them for snow/ice and mud, though I generally avoid mud so just winter use.

Either will work for you. I prefer the duo-grip for the lateral support. They are usually the less expensive ones also. I don't understand the add saying not to run the duo-grip on the road though. I've run mine on black-top several time and never saw any damage to the road. Of course that is during the winter when everything is frozen solid. They might damage it in the summer, but who uses chains in the summer?

(quoted from post at 22:22:43 02/23/15) Hi, if you have a lot of $$ and snow and ice buy a
set of these:

Boy-Oh Boy-Oh Boy!!
Great looking chains!!! Don't suppose I'll ever find a set at a garage sale for $45 like I did my double rings!

We'll both could work. My neighbor has had duo grip chains on
his JD 50 year around for years. Runs on the pavement sort
distances between fields year around too. I bought a JD 530
from an elderly gentleman a couple years ago, and it has
double ring chains on it that had not been off in over 30 years.
Granted, they were pretty much wore out. Very thin. But he
used it year round with those chains on the tires. Everything
from raking hay to pushing snow in the winter.
But, do you think you'll need chains for field work? I've seen
some pretty wore tires being used spring, summer, and fall
with little trouble. I'd just use the chains in the winter, because
they are not cheap to buy or replace when wore out. If I
needed chains in the summer, I'd replace the tires rather than
use chains. Just my opinion.

I wish I could find a good local score on a set of chains but its not yardsale season and the craigslist sellers are asking more than what I can buy new. Its crazy.

So no real difference is what I am hearing...or minor at best.

If I had a lot of money I wouldn't be running a 50 year old tractor. I would have a nice new Kubota.
