Another Canadian mad cow

Seems there's another confirmed case of BSE in Alberta. What the heck is going on up there? I'd heard several years ago that the trouble was, they were continuing to use high risk material in poultry and hog feed and it was being mixed in the same facilities as cattle feed. Any truth to that?
I've been neutral on COOL,but times like this,I'm glad consumers can know where it's coming from so we don't have a repeat of the train wreck of eleven years ago.
Beef Today

The experts were discussing this on the radio today, animal feed with animal byproducts was banned in '97, but the occasional bag still shows up once in a while, or a farmer was operating unlawfully. Also, this was an isolated event, not a herd issue.
Under international law they are allowed 10 cases per 12 calender months, before causing issues with regulatory organizations.

RRlund It is all hype and no substance.
Nobody in either the US or Canada has ever attracted BSE by eating beef
The cow in question was caught on time,..no harm done.
In Canada these cases once found get reported but in the US it has been SSS from day one and don't tell me they were never found your side of the border cause they just got/get reported as having rabies.
As far as BSE goes i think it is occurring naturally( CWD has been found to be native in elk in some wild US herds) but there was never tested for it prior to the BSE outbreak in the UK and the first case in Alberta and only God knows how many cows have died with similar symptoms in our countries prior to that
Scrapie(similar to BSE) in sheep has been known for hundreds of years
Feeding rendering material to plant eaters was a stupid thing to start with as these animals are not equipped to digest meat products.

You have a million times more change being shot to dead than contracting BSE from eating beef.

(quoted from post at 16:18:07 02/13/15) [b:b24c8aa30c]Jealous eh[/b:b24c8aa30c] ? Don't forget, [b:b24c8aa30c]WE have proper medical care insurance[/b:b24c8aa30c].

Jealous of what??

Ours is free :p

Well sorta, it is part of our income tax stuff, but, yes, it is effectively free. Nice and warm up your way? My kids are in Grande Prairie.

Hi you being a U.S farmer I wouldn't say to much about BSE in Canada. I just did a search looking for info on a cow I believe was in Alberta, and it was traced back to a Heard born in the U.S/ being fattened in Canada.
I could not find that animals reference, but going back far enough I found cases where USDA seemed to be covering things up, or being very economical with the truth!.
seems we might be honest telling you we find these animals once in a while.

It also seems odd to me that these animals keep appearing, just as beef prices rise for guys up here. It's either bad luck or somebody's got these infected animals and is trying to damage the Canadian market prices for there own gain.

Most areas of Canada - you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference from northern states.

People come from the same stock with the similar values.
Only real exception would be the greater Toronto and Montreal areas - full of self absorbed, self centered individuals that think they are the center of the universe.- but I've heard you guys say that about NYC as well.

The articles mention the case from 11 years ago, with a deboning plant in Centralia. The article says "everyone survived"- well, not really. The Centralia facility had a huge backlash, took the "Midway Meats" sign down, changed its name, and still eventually went broke. They just finished tearing it down a few weeks ago. A good 30 year local business went down the tubes, on account of a situation that it was utterly powerless to anticipate or prevent.

I know it's all hype and that nobody is going to catch anything from it,but tell the brainless consumers that. We're talking about the same dolts who think gene splicing will give them cancer in 20 years. I saw what happened when the first case of BSE was found in the US eleven years ago.

I'll tell you where I heard the feed mixing thing. We used to be able to get Canadian news on Direct TV. There was a talk show on there one day with a guy from Alberta making the claim that feed was being mixed in the same facilities and there was cross contamination. He was just asking for an end to the practice.
I'm not looking for a fight with anybody. I'd think Canadian cattlemen would want an end to the practice if it's going on. Is there a possibility that it's happening? If so,is it legal? Is more inspection and monitoring of facilities needed for all cattlemen's sake, whether in the US or Canada?

I agree with COOL! As two nations :USA/CANADA: we'd be better served to stand together. My experience with both the USA and Canada is that the news media can take an event and not share all the facts but report on the event in a KNEE JERK FASHION. News media has a lot to learn about professional conduct. I find it surprising how both nations news media will try to eviscerate a topic and all for what?

I was wondering how long it would take before they found another one... the price was at unprecedented levels the first time round... and lookie here, it's high again. Lets put a scare on and correct the price.

orry Bob, i thought you was merrican
Can't complain about the temp but we have freezing rain at the moment,..slicker than snot out there.
I can't see anyone wanting to go on vacation in Grande prairie,..do your kids live in GP?

ot to my knowledge, it is pretty regulated today what can or can not be used.
In any case i don't feed any concentrate or feed supplement to my animals,..grass and hay only.
I sometimes feed straight oats to my calves in the self feeder but that is it.

How is it free if you pay for it through income tax? I work with a few Canadians now and have worked with several through the years and they all complained about taxes worse than the Americans did, several Canadians have told me that their Canadian federal and the provincial rates combined equaled over 40 percent, if that is what you consider ''free'' then I will gladly pay for my insurance.

Nothing is free. Thats the biggest lie in any socialist system- all the "free" stuff. It's not, it never has been, it never will be. If you're happy with it, great! But please don't try to call something among the worlds most expensive health care systems "free".

Yep both son and daughter are in GP. Was invited for Xmas - said no (BTDT). Nice in the summer. Wife on her way next week to see the grandkids. Brrrrr. We are on the 'Sunshine Coast'.

Actually.... if you want to compare it on a standard of care, per capita, ours is one of the most economical in the world. Yours, without even a shadow of a doubt is far and away the most expensive and has been for a very long time.

Looking on a map, Canada is just left of Quebec, just south of the Arctic Circle and just north of that country that used to be America.

My wife works in a doctors office in Canada. When visiting Americans have to come to the office they can't believe how cheap it is here. I think a regular doctor's office visit it's $25. (Canadian dollars, about $20 American) There is talk of putting it up to $50. When something happens like what happened to JD seller's wife, it doesn't affect your retirement at all. I'm jealous of your ability to carry guns but don't want anything to do with your health care. If you follow the money you will most likely find out that the most noise saying that Canadian health care is unaffordable comes from your health insurance companies and doctors, because they are making a killing off it.
