Way to keep mice out of pole barn

Was never able to keep cats around barn to ward off mice, so I dumped the cat's litter box around outside perimeter of barn. No mice. While the cat litter may stink outside the barn, it is not as bad as the stink and damage that mice create.
 
Look into mint or something from mint extract, they don't seem to like that at all. Pine I believe is also toxic to em. There's nasty stuff in cat dung, if were me I'd want to use something other than that.
 
Dcon works for me.

I replenish it once a year or so and find no mice other than the occasional dead one.

I have a stray gray cat that has been visiting on and off for many years. Use Tom Cat chunks which is extremely effective.

Neighbor had a chicken snake living in his shop, which was an old milking parlor modified somewhat, for years. Forget the girth and length he specified but it was huge. The milking parlor worked out real well for him as he would straddle it with his vehicles and had a "pit" to work on the under side of them.
 
The only issue with that poison is dead ones where you can't see or find them, I won't ever use it again as I have found dead decaying maggot ridden ones in obscure places reeking up the area. Some places may it may not be an issue, but here, it seems they always wander off, die somewhere, then stink like heck till you find the remains. I had one do that in a tool tray on my work bench, he crawled in under something in that tray and I never saw it until it stunk the area up.
 
I keep a buffet (dish with dry food and a water dish) in the barn for my mousers. The water dish is heated (8 watts) during cold weather. The cats will come and go but the mice are no longer an issue. My mousers also take care of mice around the house and service my brother's barn which is approximately an 1/8 mile away.

I figure the food is a small price for the work they do.
