4 wheeler battery

Have the battery out for the and sincesince its its fairlyy easy to see the water level I knew it needed distilled water added. I looked at it again today and what is in there is frozen solid . Is that normal? I never really thought about it

You could try thawing it out, add some water, and try charging it. How old is it? If it's more than 5 years old it's probably junk. Why did it go dead, was something left on? How long has it been sitting? We leave ours sit in the garage in N MN for 3-4 months with no problem.

I'm not sure why (actually, I do know why - overcharge) my Polaris four wheeler has always needed water added every so often. I have had it since new and it has always done it. Pretty fitting - the rest of it is a piece of junk, why shouldn't it boil the battery dry, too.

As everyone else has said, let it thaw, (DO NOT GET IT CLOSE TO MUCH HEAT OR OPEN FLAME) even in discharged condition, then charge it slowly. If you charge a dead battery at normal rates, it will boil over. If it does take a charge, test each cell with a hydrometer, let it set for about an hour, and repeat. A weak cell should show up the first test, if not the second test will. As consensus shows, more than likely, you will need a new battery.

Check this out. Hit the "back to index" link, lots of battery info, looks pretty convincing to me!

One thing I've learned about these small 4 wheeler batteries is to take them out leave inside if not using it or plan to soon. If the weather is extremely cold. Have had my kaw 300 bayou 27 years have gone thru a few batteries . Just my experience but a warm battery seemed to fire it over all the time and the battery lasted longer. Not much to those little batteries

You can let it thaw out but you'll be lucky if it didn't split the case. So be sure to set it in a disposable pan while it thaws.

Good chance your battery is shot.

!, you allowed it to go and remain dead for a period of time, so it is likely damaged by sulfation

2, you allowed it to freeze.

Thaw it, recharge it, and if it survived, keep a battery maintainer on it all the time it is in storag to prevent this happening again.

Well thanks for all the responses. I started the 4 wheeler and parked it, thought I was doing something smart by taking the battery out. I would have never noticed the low water levels had I not taken it out.
I giess I should have followed up by putting it somewhere warm. Will try the thaw out and recharge and hope for the best
Thanks Chris
