You'd Better Not Buy Any More Tractors!

Is what my mother said before I went to a tractor meeting up North last night..........

:)

GEE WIZ!!! Guess what happened?!?!

DING DING DING!!! You guessed it! I bought a tractor, and not just one. Oh no, I bought 4...

2x Early 1940's JD A's
1940 JD B
and a G carcass

Okay so, just so that the facts are stated, dad is buying the G just for the rear wheels, so REALLY I only bought 3! :)

The A's are really rough.. Going to get a block out of one to fix my 1940 A, and then am going to sell both of them to a wrecker. The B, I may keep to restore, but I think that it will go down the road as well! Once my dad gets the wheels off the G, which could take awhile, then it is going to be crushed...

The more I bought the cheaper the got, so the package deal is going to be well worth my time and trouble to get them...

Won't mother be proud.... :)

Who else is getting themselves into trouble this weekend?

Bryce

Be careful talking about crushing old tractors around here, even if they are picked clean down to the broken bits. - that's hurtful talk to some here. ;)

Yea I can get myself in trouble without even thinking about it. Wife rolls her eyes when I mention going to Menards.....

I was on the wagon and didn't buy any tractors for a year, then last spring I bought a Farmall A, did a little work on it and sold it. Then I bought a 2N just before Christmas that is almost ready to sell just needs a little more work and I am putting it off till it gets a bit warmer. I've never bought as many tractors as fast as you do, though.

I've been knocking through them pretty quickly lately. However I am getting some better buying/selling skills, and am finding that I can easily turn a profit jockeying tractors around here. This guy I am getting them from is making me a deal just because he wants to get rid of them, and I flat out told him my plans and he didn't care...

Like I said, all 4 of these will go down the road I am pretty sure. That B would be nice to have, but I already have a B, and I don't LOVE it, so why would I need two of them?? :)

I am in trouble too. I told my son to get his outside work clothes on. We went out, and 10 minutes later a flatbed with a Case 1470 showed up. Wife just shook her head. My son was all smiles. Priceless!

Well my mother is 1200 miles away so I don't care

ha that's what my ex wife told me. she went down the road I brought home 3 new ones. now I got a gf and shes like I don't care how many you buy as long as it doesn't look like a junkyard... so I have came home with two big minnies, a massey industrial 40 b, a 730 jd diesel and a 674 international. she just shook her head. i'm up to 11 tractors now all run but 2......... and want more

Hi Bryce
That was a relief reading the post and seeing your Mom had said no more tractors!. i figured it was going to be Casey saying that. Haven't heard about her lately, Hows things going?.

As for anybody else getting into trouble, I'm researching a new mig welder/ with spool gun capability, for a couple tractor projects. I kinda backed my self in a hole to make a choice with over research. Now I have no clue what to buy..

Hey as your already in trouble you want to buy 10 or more fordsons?. then I don't need to buy another mig welder that would be my problem solved L.O.L!
Regards Robert

Going great! She went with me yesterday and said "those are ugly!" :)

Can't argue with that... They are pretty bad!!

She had fun at the tractor dinner meeting, and everyone enjoyed meeting her.. All went well! :)

I wouldn't mind having a Fordson, but I think that if I get anymore Ford's around here my Chevy truck is going to get a little upset.... :)

Hey! Seems you got bit bad by the bug.Of which there is no cure.I 'only' own 14(just hauled off #15).Three are 'Gate gaurds'/yard art, only one doesnt run and may not again:( Yes I need still more.Even when I cant pay utilitys or make the house payment, there is always room for one more.My wife does not agree....... I still say"You just cant have too many tractors!" :)

Glad all's going well for you both and hope it continues that way. As for the Chevs getting upset, I don't ever recall Chev making a farm tractor. So that argument has no ground L.O.L.
Maybe I'll just keep them and save you even more trouble at home!.
Regards Robert

Yard "ART" for the "junk" ones. Put them in a line near the road or driveway. Plant a flower bed around them will hopefully make ma come around to liking more tractors. You can never have enough tractors. At last count there are more than 20 on the yard or in the shed here. 11 need work to get useable, the rest are used even though they have their own small troubles.

I don't know he's a pretty good wheeler-dealer so he's learning a trade.Thousands of college grads
living in their parent's basement because they can't find a job with their useless major. The cost of a college education these days would give him a whole lot of capital to work with.

Paul, I was kinda thinking along the same line, concerning scraping tractors. It doesn't matter what brand or model you have, someone out there is looking for parts. Now, I can understand maybe Bryce does not care to get into shipping parts, but I would not scrap a one until I checked them out for good useable parts and advertised them, 'cause once they're gone, they're GONE!

Robert, I hate to be the smart azz as this site has too many already, however GM once owned the Samson Tractor. Short lived. I remember this as some one brought one to our local show a few times. Neet OLD machine! sorry joe

Statistics don't back up your story, pick the right education and it pays off big time. Engineers are making 70K out of school now. My nephew is graduating with an art degree, and I really do not know how he plans to make a living.

Aren't there some parts on ther that someone could use before you send them to China? Where are you located?

I did Bryce; I live in Montana and bought a DC Case just north of the Kansas-0Nebraska State line. I plan on going down there in May for my 50 year class reunion so it won't be so bad.

I'm with others, if you have time you'll make far more to sell off any other parts of value on them before scrapping. You got the beginnings of a great eBay parts business there. Even if it's not worth you time removing and selling parts I'd advertise the whole tractor at say 10-20% over what you expect to get for them as scrap and let someone come get them--instead of wasting your time hauling them to the scrap yard. Almost anything is worth more to someone than just the steel it's made from.

Plenty of kids are getting out of college with $100,000 in debt to pay off so they better make more $$$ the problem now is there is a flood of college grads many with history and art degrees that are qualified to do nothing. How long before those companies hiring the engineers move to China or Indonesia where they can get better engineers for a fraction of what they pay them here?

I agree with you Traditional Farmer. If college grad didn't have the debt they wouldn't need the higher pay. I read some place that by the time they pay for the debt(loans and interest) the non-college student passes the college student up in lifetime earnings. I was talking with a machine shop owner once. He said once they go to college people suddenly think that they know everything about it(in this case machining) and in reality can't do anything right. The engineers are getting smarter in other places too because of the education system here in the USA. Useless classes and few workplaces are offering apprenticeships or other educations anymore.

Bryce it sounds like you bought the man's thoughts along with his tractors if you don't care about scraping them. You may make a living trying to sell parts from tractors but that may not last long enough for you to make a living at it unless you get into newer tractors that people use for farming in today's work force. Make plans on going to college and have the tractor as a hobby.

Just don't end up like my dad and me. Dad in asstd living and me with two barns with 30 tractors and no time or money to restore them.

Man, you guys all had fun this weekend, and I got to run some wiring on a house my son bought. Something's wrong here !!

Do NOT listen to anyone who (FOOLISHLY) tells you to skip college. It opens doors. What you do once you have a foot in the door is all about you. People who leave college loaded with debt and never make anything of themselves would be relative failures in whatever ventures they take.

The "skip school" anecdotal comments are exceptions rather than the rule. Statistics back up the FACT that an advanced education is second ONLY to ambition as a way to get ahead in life.

I'm probably old enough to be your grandfather. I'm STILL working on ANOTHER degree.

Like my dad used to say, "You can never be too rich, too good looking, or too smart".

Whoa Now! Nobody panic!

I am not scrapping any of them, there is a guy that buys them from people, and then parts them out for a living, he will probably get all 4 of these.. Maybe not the JD G, because the ONLY thing left there is the frame, rear end, axles, and wheels. We want the wheels, and the current owner has tore all the guts out of them, so really it is just the housing...

I am going to get 2 of them today, and will get a few pictures when I get home, but that won't be until late this afternoon, maybe 4 or so....

By the way, my dad said to tell you "SHOW ME THAT HEMI!" :)

I am looking of a picture of me and dad with our Camaro, but I can't find one?? If I do I will post it with the pictures later.... Bryce

NO no no! Don't worry! I am truly against scrapping tractors, because I have been that guy searching the country over for one little thing...

They are going to a guy we call the "scrapper" he lives a few hours away and has 100's of tractors. He buys them and parts them out, and where there is nothing left to go, he crushes rear ends, frames, the things that are rarely needed....
