"Little boxes, on a hillside, little boxes made of
ticky-tacky; little boxes on a hillside, and they
all look just the same."

Lots of that around here, Larry. Started back in the '70s. Old farms get bought up and developed. Yuppies want to live in the "country" then want near-by shopping and all the conveniences they had in the suburbs.

I had a friend, now deceased, who had a hundred plus acre dairy farm about 10 miles from me. The dairy closed down long ago, but the rest of the farm was in the NC Century program, having been in the family since the 1700's. Now the house and much of the land is still there, and still in the family, but being leased to someone else to put their cows on. One of his fields is now a hospital, across the street is a shopping center, and on the side opposite the hospital, for now, is an undeveloped area and an interstate highway.

Given that they decided to put a on and off ramp to this particular road, I can see it will all be developed within a few more years....just like they've done everywhere else.....

I guess you can't stop progress, or what they call progress, but it just makes me sick to see so much of it in areas that used to be really nice....

Your new camera doesn't work very good, makes scenery look cold and kind of gloomy, just kidding! Glad you're back in the picture business.

Same thing here but the odd thing is the people that have moved here, bought lots, built houses on what used to be farms complain the most about
'all the farms being cut up'. What do they think their lot was?

Yep, and then they start whining if there happens to be a few cows grazing nearby. Oh the smell, oh the noise oh the ______ (fill in the blank). Then they will form a commute to "study' the issue and try to get rid of said cows, smell, noise etc. Citidiots!

Family I know... the sister built a new house in one
of the fields, then as they always did the boys had
duck manure spread on the fields, sister called the
town and complained! My grandfathers farm is all
houses now but selling lots was the only way they
were able to survive as his bad heart kept him from
doing too much.

Been happening since about 1700 here. The original farmers were French settlers along the river. Detroit is built on their farms.

I know I can't stop it, at least not forever, but so far, I control it by buying every neighboring piece of land that can be bought.

Tom:

Know that feeling well.

When I first came to Pahrump, Nevada back in the early 1950's it was a small farming community with a population for the entire valley of less than 300 people. When I moved here 35 years ago the population had just hit 2000 and it was still a nice farming community.

NOW the population is over 38,000 and very little farming - the large farm owners got together and decided that they could make more money by selling their land as "real estate" than they ever could by farming it. So they started selling it all off without putting any infrastructure in place first; now they're playing catch-up.

REAL SHAME!

Doc

Bought my place in 1970. One half mile off highway and 4 miles from town. Then they come along and made it a four lane. Now when the wind is in the right direction can hear the whine of traffic and two filling stations with in a mile and a half.
