Should I Wait

I decided to replace the water pump on my Ford 4600 (leaking). I don't have heat in my shop and removed things a little at a time. I got a new water pump and thermostat but now I wonder if the gasket replacement with permatex will work when its cold. Its around 25-30 degrees but warms a little more when trapping the sun in the barn. It sure isn't warm and I don't want put everything back together and have leaks. The info on the sealant stuff is not really helpful regarding outside temp. Has anyone done this in colder weather? Thanks.

ive had really good luck making a gasket from the side of a case of beer or pop and using a ball-peen hammer

I've made gaskets that way for better than 50 years, but my brother's boy said his school teacher said that won't work. Dah! I wonder how I got by with it on everything from flathead Ford V8s to 2 cyl JD tractors.

I quit using the old traditional Permatex years ago. I like the Permatex (black) silicone gasket maker. I use it on everything, with or with out a gasket.

I know if the gasket will stay dry then beer/soda box card stock works fine. Oil, gas, lubes, etc I go for that treated paper card stock at the parts store. A little tap tap with a hammer makes one sweet gasket with a little care!

If you have properly cleaned up the gasket surfaces, no sealer is required. Those gaskets are designed to be installed dry. At least that is what the Ford instructors at the Ford training school at Mt. Laurel, NJ told me when I attended Ford training school. The official recommendation at the time was to use a bit of adhesive to keep the gasket in place, and that no other sealant was required.
Your truck, your choice. My 2 cents.

OK Thanks...the last time I did a waterpump on MF35 the repair tech told me to spray a permatex type of spray that gets tachy (moot point but this was warm conditions)I suppose there is different schools of thought but I figured some kind of treatment would smooth out irregularities in the mating surfaces.

You may try to run with no radiator pressure, don't tighten cap.

I had a small water pump leak on old dodge mini van. I couldn't find it, the leak was that small. So I ran with a loose cap. One day, the pump bearing locked up and spun the pulley off pump, then I found the leak.
