Have some tire chains that I think go on a semi but are wide enough to fit my 12.4 x 28 tractor tire . on one side of tire chain there are three kidney shaped pieces of steel that I don't know what they are for , if they are to tighten chain how come they are only on one side ? is it possible to post a picture on here? if so how

Ken,Yep semi chains The Ds are to tighten the chains on the outside after hookinng together on the inside.

Thats the way chains work. Would be real hard to get in to tighten the inside. Most chains just have a hook on the inside. Then a overcenter boomer thing-a-bob on the outside. then you twist the little (kidney shaped) things till your chains are tight. Some people even pull tarp straps from top to bottom etc. I personally like my chains a little loose. so they kinda work around on the tire. Vic

Years ago when we lived in an area where chains were sometimes required on our car, I became adept at putting them on rather quickly. There is a rubber tightner - like a big thick round rubberband - hooked to three links, in a triangular pattern, on the outside of the tire chain. Not the inner side. The reason for tightening the outside only is if the chains became loose, the tightner would cause the chain to fall on the outside of the tire and not the inside where it could wrap around the axle and cause all kinds of grief.

You will need to take two and hook them together to make them long enough.May just need 1 and 1/2 per side for a 11.2x28 or 12.4x28.

I'm sure you will also find that you do not want them tight on a rear tractor tire. If to tight they will just stay down in the lugs.
