wheel rim bolts and the Correct Police

I have several tractors with 6-loop rims. One arrived here with
carriage bolts and still has them. One arrived with square-head
bolts and still has them. One arrived with square-head bolts but
when I replaced the rims the bolts were so banged up I needed
new ones, and the local hardware store only had hex-head bolts
so I used those. One of the self-appointed Correct Police noted
the varied bolts on my tractor rims and my response was, "Hey,
at least on each tractor they're consistent." Is there any real
reason to prefer one kind over another, or do some people need
to get a life?

Is there a reason? Yes... Lots of people when they replace the six loop rims on Ferguson tractors they replace the original pip head bolts with carriage bolts like Ford used. The pip head bolts were made with a flat on each side of the head so that you can put a 1 1/16" wrench on it to keep the bolt from turning. Plus the pip head bolts have a little nub that sticks out on each side to keep them from turning in the loops. That set up is far better than carriage bolts. Do I judge people's tractors for not using them? No...but from a practicality and working tractor standpoint, it makes more sense to use the original style bolts.

Some folks make it a bigger deal than it is.

I never even worried about matching hubcaps, only that the two on the same side of the car matched. Can only see one side at a time.

Congratulate him on noticing and tell him you do small things like that on purpose just to see who really knows what they're talking about. :)

I use the square head and get them that fit tight and don't need wrench to hold them. Hardware stores around hear have them and as does Fastenal. But what you used is fine and I don't often see many guys saying anything and if they do just blow them off.

I've had a couple guys get on me about minor things when I restored my WD45. Mostly it was after I posted a couple pics here and on the Allis forums. One guy was giving me grief over decal placement and tried to get me to buy a book for $40 to show me the exact & correct placement. When I looked into the book on Amazon most of the comments on the book were the pictures didn't show the exact location for placement or where all the decals needed to go. I basically tell someone that when they wish to buy a tractor and invest the time & money they can do whatever they wish. I don't always like the way some guys "nnalert" their tractors, but to each his own.
