OT, washing machine

Bit off topic but it cleans my close when I am working on machinery. We have a Maytag 11 year old top loading washing maching machine and now it has started putting grease out the top of the agitator. Is this repairable? If so what would be the procediure? Cannot figure a way to get the agitator out.

I had less than a 2 year old whirlpool, which I think now is the same as maytag. The top bearing on tranny was making a high pitch sound. I got a full refund on machine, had an extended warranty. They said it would cost too much to repair. Less than 2 year old and cost too much to fix. I ended up with machine and got a full refund. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK GOD FOR LOWES EXTENDED WARRANTY. If it didn't have it, I would have been out everything.

I did some research. I wanted top loading. Don't want to bend over with side loaders and don't want the smell of door gasket to deal with. The only machine I could find under $500 was a GE. When I looked underneath new machines they all the rest looked like a whirlpool clone. The GE was built like the old school washers. Mechanical timer. No locking lids. You set the water level.

Leroy- there is a video on utube showing how to remove the agitator. I used it last year to dismantle my maytag.

If you can't find it, post back and I'll look to see if I can find the link.

I have no idea how to use utube. Also having trouble with recieving video's. This is on a recently bought reconditioned computor with win 7. The XP machine this replaced would recieve them but on stop and go basis. Was beyond repair. The other XP that also took a crap and is in shop now that I hope can be saved would not recieve video's.

Not sure if it's set up the same or not, but I had an old speed queen that started slinging grease out from under the agitator. Long story short, the seal let water into the gearbox and the gear oil floated back out the seal.

I had replaced the seal once prior and the bushing and shaft were showing wear and pitting this time so I junked it.

It's probably fixable, but may be rather involved.

Leroy - I had a Maytag that was getting what my wife called "grease" on the clothes. We had a good dealer then, and I approached him about the necessary repairs needed to fix it. He said the first thing to do is make sure it's actually grease. He suspected it was actually a buildup of fabric softener/soap on the bottom and inside of the agitator. I pulled the agitator, and he was right - there was a buildup that had gotten heavy enough to drop pieces loose and stain the clothes. Cleaned it good, and the "grease" problem went away. I fixed two more just like it that had been banned from their homes because of "leaking gearboxes". Good luck. Oh - I had to rig an agitator puller out of a 4X4, a small hydraulic jack, and a cross link from an old tire chain. That agitator had never been removed, and it looked like it was gonna break right before it popped loose.

I like the way you didn't mention the spelling of clothes. Some things are difficult to spell and spell check does not know the word you need if the wrong spelling is a real word.
