coyotes kill horse

been looking for the ones I've seen and others have heard on my property. Been about a month since any sightings and no evidence in the fresh snow. Trail cam showing nothing yet. I'm hoping they've moved on. Neighbor has 3 horses with a field fence around it. Which brings up the question: can coyotes jump a 4 ft field fence easily. I know a deer will go over them like they're not even there, but how about a coyote?

They can easily get over a four foot fence. Sometimes when
hunting them they will hunker down in the weeds. We've had
them just straight up when we flush them. Easily higher than
golden rod. Cidiots think coyotes are a cute dog and they
shouldn't be controlled. Until they loose fluffy, fido or worse yet
their child gets attacked.

I'm just west of where this happened, on the edge of
Genesee/Shiawasse county. They were thick up here for quite
a few years. They get hunted hard now. That barely keeps
them controlled.

I ventilate every coyote I get the chance to. A good mule or donkey will keep most of them away. What we call a horse mule[gelding] seems to be the best.Found a dead dog in their pasture last week.I have seen them actually chase coyotes. Its really funny to watch Shorty, whose mother was a Percheron, slip up on a dog. He will pretend to be grazing untill he gets within striking distance.Usually the dog or coyote is not killed but he does not want to come back! They make pretty good guard animals but you have to be careful putting them with momma cows because some mules and jacks look at the newborn as an intruder and attack it. I wont say that pack couldnt take Shorty or Tom down but I would there would be 2 or 3 coyotes laying there too.

Had one of those jokers on my driveway yesterday, we were walking at each other. I say "where the heck do you think you are going", he stops, then takes a few paces forward, THEN figures out he is in the wrong place. He turned around and walked downhill ,out of sight. No critters here to worry about, so no biggy. Wouldn't mind letting (pushing) the wife's 18 yr old grouchy cat out for the night. ;^) Keep the last part quiet eh.

We have BIG coyotes here in NW Missouri. My very large German Shorthaired Pointer will occasionally kill one and drag it home to show my wife and I. He's very proud of his handy work.

Luckily he's a former horseback trial dog and can run like crazy, As he gets older though I know I'll need to start keeping him close to home.

On the 1-26-2015 news today, theu reported that a cyote had killed a horse in aroung Genesee County, Michigan. The owner was on TV and described how she and her dogs tried to drive the cuote off but it was too late for the horse. I think she said the horse was an older animal.
Best Wishes !

Yes they can jump a fence easily. I was losing baby goats so
I put an electric fence on top an on the bottom outside. That
slowed them down till they figured out they had to jump the
fence clear of the wire. Previously they would climb the fence.

I got a Pyrenese and have no losses for several years now. I
recently started free ranging a few hens just to see if it would
work out. It has so far. No losses.

Funny finding this topic. I was out last night about 200 yards from the house in the total darkness with only a little HF flashlight and heard a pack of coyotes toward the front of my property. Then I heard them run through the woods within 100 yards of where I was. Sure gave me the willies.

Coyotes have killed calves and injured cows here. I've already told how I lost over 50 lambs, ewes and goats to them in one year. Got 2 Pyrenees guard dogs that stay with the stock 24/7/365. No more predation losses.

We have a lot of citiots in this state that think wolves need to be re-introduced to northern NY. Fools don't realize the damage coyotes do and they want to introduce an even deadlier predator!

I've heard them closer to our place lately than ever before and not single ones like usual. We have llamas but no babies right now so not too worried about that should any of them be stupid enough to come in the pasture. Several lower wires on the fence are electrified and that usually discourages anything from coming in and the fences are too high for all but a deer to jump.

I keep waiting for the citiots to decide to "re"introduce feral hogs in Virginia. Ignoring pleas from the farmers and the
Farm Bureau, the citiots "re"introduced elk into the western part of the state, vowing to maintain the herd at 400. They have also "re" introduced mountain lions into a neighboring county. Coyotes are everywhere and it's not unusual to see them within 100 yards of the house or stable...they've been extremely vocal the last few days...must be mating season.
Unfortunately, where I see them, there is a heavily traveled US highway as a backstop which precludes taking a shot.

Had a coyote come within 10 ft. of house. Mother cat had kittens under deck . Mother cat took after coyote, never seen coyote again. Mother cat was fine, just protecting here babys. If I hadnt seen this with my own eyes I would not have believed it.

Have any of you ever had a chance to watch them dance by the light of a full moon? I have, it is beautiful to watch, but that does not stop me from shooting them.

Not trying to start a fight, but around here, a
coyote wouldn't stand a chance with the horses. I
have seen a single coyote fallowing the horses, and
I have seen 4 or 5 of them in a pack. We are close
enough to the REZ that we fight dog packs. Now THEY
WILL KILL about anything they want. Including a 9
year old girl.
