Right down the road from us is a shoprite grocery store,,last week they had cooks smoked hams on sale,,1/2 of a whole smoked ham,The shank half was 99 cents a lb,,,the butt half was 1.09 a lb,They didnt have many shank halves left the day I was there so I got a butt half, around 11 lbs,They were not frozen. That is too much ham for the wife and I to cook at one time,so I sliced it ,cutting around the bone.We ended up with many meals of nice slices,we wrapped them and put them in the freezer. Also ended up with aome small pieces after trimming up etc.The small pieces we cooked under the broiler and had them that night,A few days later we took the bone and the end of the ham which couldnt be sliced because of the bone, with some beans in the crock pot. It was a good deal,
,and we dont live far from the store , I Just bought the ham that day. Hard to believe they could sell them for that price, but they did sell a lot of them. How can they sell them so cheap?

I just swallowed a bite of a spiral cut smoked ham that we bought for 1.58 per pound. Not as good of a buy you got but I'm betting it was every bit as good. Probly no way to win or loose but I always win with smoked ham on every bite. :)^D

Just picked up a ham too for $0.99 lb(normal price $3 lb). loins were $1**lb (normal $4) at the local store on my way home from work. Don't know where the money is made either. Its a deal either way considering where we usually took animals to butcher it cost $2 lb. for smoking only let a lone cutting. What's bacon going for anyone know? If that is sky high the market might be over saturated by hams and other cuts because everyone wants bacon. It don't pay to waste ham because people want the bacon from the same animal.

the turnips grew so well I Had to try everyway possible to use them,,,some of the recipes were a hit, some were a miss, but,,,it was an interesting challenge! I wish I could grow potatoes as easy as the turnip patch is,plus the seed for the entire patch was 3 dollars. Plant the patch,,,no cultivating, weeding or fertilizer, just harvest in the fall, all fall until heavy freeze. It is really easy and economical.Potato seed is somewhat expensive, you can grow them with straw cover, but straw is usually not cheap, and if you cultivate and hill the potaoes they need to be cultivated at least two times, plus the colorado potato beetles are a constant struggle,,,,so,,,,to make a long story,,,as unlikable as it is,the turnip is a very economical crop,,,,(this is an independant research,,,non scientific conclusion done by me,,,your results may vary) lol!

Probably the "loss leader" for the day. (I think that's what they call it)
They discount something below cost to get you in to the store so you'll spend a lot more money on something else.

it said, lincoln nebraska or kansas city missouri, farmland foods,,, a division of smithfield I have heard that a chinese company wants to but smithfield?

Have you ever tried growing sweet potatoes? They are easy to grow and taste better that turnips.

I think your right,,,is it ok if I Just bought the ham ,,and they had bumble bee solid white tuna .88 cents a can ,,limit 4 cans,,,so I bought a half ham and 4 cans of tuna,,that was all we needed,so that was all I Bought...hope there not mad at me.....lol

Our local grocery store has taken to tacking on an "additional $25 purchase" to stop folks from popping in and just buying on the sale-priced item. :(

yes,,they are good, grew a variety called Beauregard ? last season, they grew well,my wife and daughter love them,I Have to plant more next season. The deer do like to eat the vines though

they dont at shoprite, but you need a card, its called the price plus card,at thanksgiving if your card totals a certain amout you get a free turkey,The amount isnt too high, but I forget what it is,the wife would know

We buy big bone in whole hams. Cook them for about an hour then score them and baste them with mustard, orange or pinapple juice, sorgum or molasses, whiskey, cloves, and pinapple slices. Then we baste every 15 minutes until done. Afterwords we cut it up and pour the juice back over that. It doesn't get any better.

believe it or not,,,no,,they will walk by the turnip patch to eat the sweetpotato vines, and will travel a long way to eat red beet tops, beet tops seem to be the favorite for the deer around our garden,I Stopped planting them.

heres some of them
,thats the neighbors grandma holding one

Deer like beans to. Where we have a garden plot the owner of the property plants a food plot for the deer. The deer ignore that and go half way(sometimes all the way) across the field, based on tracks, and eat the bean plants and some of the beets and sample pumpkins, squash and melons. I never saw any evidence on the sweet potatoes, tomatoes, peppers or any of the Kohl crops(cabbage, kohlrabi, turnips...).

Not likely. The fact that a company is owned by a Chinese firm, does NOT mean the product is from offshore -think about it. Just because products are MIC is not a reflection of quality, only the willingness of consumers for cheap prices and importers to make a profit. How the heck do you think a country the size/population of China survives with inferior products-they EXPORT the apcray and keep the better at home. Yipes ! -think about it for more than 2 seconds.

Cooks hams are the only ones I'll buy, Safeway brand is also Cooks, so the butcher told me. They're always good. I buy the shank when they're $.99/lb. and the butts are usually about $1.10/lb. Good tasting hams. Then you can always use the bone for some good beans.
You couldn't give me a spiral sliced ham, too thinly sliced. I've got a good knife and can slice my own..

Shame on you! Don't you know you are supposed to buy "heritage" hams (@ $10/lb.)from the young local city couple who moved out on an acre of land so that they could live sustainably....come on, get with the program. How can we survive if we don't support the local "farmers"??? JK

One way to cure cabin fever. We buy, cook, and freeze those cheap hams for my lunch sandwiches, ought to be better then processed cold cuts.

I've always wanted to ask, How does one smoke a ham? Which end do you light and which end do you put in your mouth to puff on? Don't you need a dry ham to get it to smoke?
