On ebay item #221648366099 is a picture for sale of some tractors from the UTB tractor plant in Brasov
Romania. These look like the Farmall 450 even have wheel weights that look Farmall.Anyone ever seen one of these here in the USA?This plant owned by Fiat built tractors for Long,AC and others but have never heard of the Farmall Clones.

I have one I am currently restoring. It called A UTB 650 M. They were available with cabs and 4 wheel drive. Universal tractor was owned or controlled by the Romanian government and were licensed to build Fiat type tractors. The 650 tractor has a mechanical TA,560 IH style steering but uses a 290 ci. 4 cylinder diesel with direct injection and weight is 9000 lbs.

Maybe somebody who is really up on the history of IH may know something the rest of us do not. IH did a lot of manufacturing in Europe. The Romania-built 450 might have been built by IH in one of their factories for the Eastern European market or they licensed somebody to build it. Deere built its 730 tractors in Argentina for that market after that tractor had been discontinued in North America.

I have a UTB 800 the only one I can find in North America, now that I think about it, it has some looks of a Farmall.Think its about 80 HP has a 4 cylinder diesel and it has something like a TA.16 speeds forward in all.

Marketed the 650m here in the UK in the late 1960s - early 1970s. A friend of mine had 4 of them on large manure spreaders working them 7 days a week contracting work. They all survived and have been restored and are now in his tractor collection. MJ

These were an old Fiat design. Did Long sell some of these tractors in the US? They did sell some Zetor/Ursus models.

Lots of main line manufacturers sold/licensed their obsolete tractor models to poorer Countries.

Dealer I know did try selling Universal tractors as a cheaper option to his main Deutz line. The basic tractor was ok but the Rumanian built parts like alternators, lights, tyres etc were dreadfully poor quality

Looks like the "650" was several different tractors.

I was looking at some pictures on google images, and some of them definitely have 450/560 design features. One I saw had a 450 style front bolster, frame rails that looked very IH, and the 6-sided hydraulic filter cover on the side of the torque tube.

Romania was a Soviet puppet state, and the Soviets were known for openly and blatantly copying American/Western designs. A classic example being the Tu-4 bomber, a bolt-for-bolt copy of the Boeing B-29. The only recourse we had for "patent infringement" at the time was nuclear war.

This is smaller Universal sold here, based on the original Fiat 450 design

Long sold the Fiat type tractors in the US. They were also sold as Universal in Canada. We had one of late 80's era, about 70 hp. It was a pretty decent tractor. Only major problem we had was with needle bearings in the mfwd. Replaced them with bushings by a local machine shop, and lasted the rest of the time we owned it.

I think they're made in Slovakia or somewhere over there. It's the real deal. The company must have had a deal with IH and rebadged them and sold them as IH.

They tried to copy The Concorde too... manage to
get a set of plans (which weren't quite right) and
made the Tupolev TU-44, it had a nasty habit of
falling out of the sky...
