engine head rebuilding

So picked up the head tonight for my IH 1066 dt 414 engine! Was a little higher than expected but im not gonna complain to bad cause I never had a problem with anything this shop has done for me! But just wondering what machine work is like price wise in other areas! He cleaned resurfaced new valves new springs new guides and new keepers! I wont put the cost on here cause I know some people would tell me it was high if he did all that for 50 bucks! just curious!

Well Brian, could tell you how much it is around here, but then it might be more than you paid, and you might tell me it was too high. Or, it might be less than you paid and you might think it was too cheap around here. Just can't win.
Tom

I stick with one shop that I can trust. Several heads in a year plus flywheels, crankshafts, etc. They may not be the cheapest, but I know the job is done right when I get it back. Have had problems with other machine shops in the past. Sometimes you get what you pay for...

I forget what i was charged. I do have a horror story about it.
This place is local, as far as i have heard they been around for somewhat of a long time and do good work. I took my allis chalmers 190xt head and all new parts except for the seats. I asked them if they needed any specs. They said no they have the specs for it. Week or so later they called me said it was done. I go there and asked if everything went well. The guy said yeah other than we had to do a lot of grinding on the valves to get the correct angle.
The original tractor comes with 45 degree angle both intake and exhaust. When you rebuild one set (forget which) is still 45 and the other set is changed to 30 degrees. This info is in the service manual and the kit i bought was correct (i checked).
So anyhow i said holy smackrel andy you ground all the new 30 degree angle valves to 45 . He said yeah thats what was in there and thats what we put back. The other guy that owns the place chimed in and said don't know why they would change it to 30 a 45 seals better.
I was kinda torqued by now but i held my tongue paid the bill and left.

If you find a shop you can trust, price is no object!

I live near the DFW metromess... The selection is dismal. Only a very few that can be trusted, they stay covered up, months of lead time, especially "racing season", which seems to be the year round excuse.

Lots and lots of places that take your money, ruin your parts, hide their screw-ups. What's amazing, some of these places have been in business for ever! Survive of an endless supply of one time customers!

There is a very good shop up the road. A complete job on a 6 cylinder will be over $1000. Haven't had one done in a while so don't know exactly.

If I was doing a six-cylinder head and no new seats being installed? I.e. 12 new valves, springs, and guides and 12 seats cut? $200-$250 labor and whatever the parts cost.

I Don,t know what they charged but sure wish I knew you needed it. I have a 466 ih head (same as the 414) here fresh valve, springs, guides and surface planned. Man never came back sure would have been cheap. I havwe been saving it for one of the 15c dozers we run but think they are going to out last me.

Well it's been years since I worked at the Navistar truck dealer but we used to sell reman cyl. heads for the DT466 I don't remember how much $ ? but that stuff was not cheap either.
Might be worth a call to one and see what they cost today. At least that would give you some sort of an idea.

I'll throw some prices out there, I'm not scared, but I'm not going to name the shop because they've been getting a little sloppy lately.

Few years ago they were doing 400 series IH heads for about 450-500 out the door, new valves, seats, guides, springs, keepers, retainers, injector cups and water directors. Friend of mine just had one done for a 1066 and he was not happy when he had to replace the injector cups on a redone head because they did not replace them. About the same price. I had priced out some reman's with exchange for him and they were around $1200 at the time.
Same shop, I got a replacement head for a Ford 6600, put it on started putting water in the oil. After chasing it down ended up being a core plug under the valve cover, probably 50 cents worth of core plugs and they didn't change them, my local shop gave me new ones to put in.

That sounds like the time I had a Deere 6 cyl. head done and after it was installed I had an antifreeze drip out the back freeze plug. WTF !
My regular shop who has always done a good job says "you have to tell us you want them changed"
I was lucky I could access it without removing the head. I think there was enough of an opening in the firewall panel ?

So, Brian, are you going to tell us now how much you paid? Step right up and tell it. Afraid you paid too much?? If you got a good deal, I assume you would post how much.
Tom

I just had a head done on a six cylinder waukesha 310 diesel.
I had bought a complete valve kit for $340 and installed the guides myself, then took it to the machine shop to have the seats ground and the head shaved for $132.
I did the install and lapping the valves myself.
New guides valves springs seals and keepers.
Total out of pocket $472 CD.
