JD Model A 1936 tractor value

I have some old farm equipment... a JD Model A 1936 tractor and the plow that came with it, another old plow, a Van Brunt grain drill, an old forge, endgate seeder, and several other items. A local farmer offered $3000 for everything and not sure if this is a fair price or not... wondering if anyone has suggestions on the best way to determine fair value and if this isn't a fair price, how how to sell it.

Well if the tractor is running and with fair tires it could easily be in the $2500-3000 market itself. If it is not running and or has bad tires then the value can easily drop to much lower. The attachments are in demand but are not high value. Plows can be usually bought in the $200-500 range. The older drills are in about the same range. They other stuff is not high dollar either.

Without pictures it is hard to tell you much but his offer of $3000 is not an insult for sure. You maybe able to bargain it up if the condition is better than average.

Remember the auction prices you see can easily have a 10% commission out of the gross. So that $3000 tractor only nets the seller $2700.

If he offered that much, there must be something special about that tractor that he knows and you don't.

an old forge, that would not be related to the tractor and in itself depending on what it is, how it is made could by itself be worth a thousand dollars. Now if he means an old forage harvestor that is different.

Working on a photo but that's more difficult than it should be. The rear wheels are steel the front tires are shot. Tractor hasn't been started in years but I turn the flywheel at least yearly and everything turns. If my dad was still alive I believe he could have the tractor started in short order. The forge just happens to be in the photo.

Two years ago I sold my '37 "A" and matching 4 B plow, both in excellent mechanical condition, only needing paint, for $ 2800 to a guy in Kansas. You need to take it and don't look back.

You won't be able to post pics if you're new on here. Takes a few posts to do so or contact Kim and ask for permission at "Site Comments".

Thanks Mark. I worked on it quite a while, felt like a dough head and ended up calling my son... he had problems too and sent the photo to the above website.

Love the front wheels on that old A!!! Those are kind of special and hard to find. If I remember right, they were cast by International Harvester while John Deere was going through a labor strike. Only made them for a couple months.

I sold a good running and good looking 39 A a few years ago with decent tires on it for $2500. It was a hand crank.
I would sell if I were you.

Those front wheels are hard to come by, they were made by F&H you see them more on Farmalls but they did make them for a short while for the A, also made a set for the B. If they had the big JD hub cap that would be a bonus. Those wheels usually sell for more than the factory round spokes, they are in the Unstyled Model A book written by Wes Malcom and sold by Green Magazine (plug for you Richard)

After seeing your picture I would say sell if your wanting to. The JD is a good collectable tractor as the steel wheels and rare front tries make is desirable. It would need a lot of work and it is not that rare. So his $3000 offer is really pretty spot on as for value.

You just need to decide if you really want to sell.

Nice original tractor. Be a shame for someone to paint that beauty. Only original once. Where are you located??
