which tractor is better?

I'd vote for the Fergie for the 4 speed transmission and the overhead valve engine. But those Ford flat heads are bullet proof too.

Pretty much a toss-up- neither has live PTO or live hydraulics. Ferguson has a little more power (2N would be more comparable to TO20), but you're not going to rock the world with either of them.

A Ferguson TO-30 is what a Ford N-series want to be when it grows up. Seriously, the Ferguson weighs more, and also has a more powerful, wet sleeved, overhead valve engine. It is just more tractor.

Oddly enough, I own BOTH a 1954 Ferguson TO-30 and a 1945 Ford 2N.

I personally use the 2N more, but that is because I am afraid to use the Ferguson!

I think that the Ferguson is a better tractor than the Ford because:

It has a newer, stronger engine.
Heavier in the rear.
MUCH better brakes.
4 speed trans.
And seems to be stronger on the 3 point lift.

Also, it is really nice to be able to just trip a lever, and flip the hood open to work on stuff, can't do that with a 2N.

I think that the biggest difference is the brakes. The 2N's system is useless, at least on the right side!!! The Ferguson is basically and 8N, and that is clearly what REPLACED the 2N.

Not a lot of difference, but diffidently better in a few distinct areas.... Bryce

I would take the OHV contential engine over a flat head any day.

I THINK the pto on 2n had to be turning before the 3 pt would work. Ford fixed that problem in 53 with the Jubilee.

I think some later fergies had a Sherman like Hi/low tranny and live hyd. Not sure about the TO30. I think the TO30 was 30 hp and the 2N was around 20. I would want the 30 hp.

The ONLY thing to concerned about is the Z129 block on the TO30. It's not very forgiving if you let it overheat. Just keep an eye on the temp. On either one, be sure to get an overrunning clutch for the PTO. It will save you a lot of grief. If you need more info on what it's for, just ask.

Apples and oranges so to speak. TO30 is a bigger newer tractor. TO 30 was introduced in 51 the 2N ceased production in 47. The only way it wouldn't matter would be as a show tractor. Both are close to the same physical size so transporting to shows would be about equal. As a work tractor: When you jump 5 HP on a 23 HP tractor that's a little more than 1/5 gain in power. That will be noticeable. The extra gear helps a lot too.
