18 hp kohler off cub cadet mower

I picked up this used kohler off craigslists just for parts. Guy said a mechanic said the engine was junk.

I would be very concerned if I had a cub with a kohler. I would make sure it wasn't full of grass and dirt. You can't tell from pic, the cooling fins of head were 100% choked with dirt.

I have picked up a couple of McCulloch 610 and 650 saws at flea markets. Take of the covers and the cooling fins, around the coil, gas tank and the head of the engine were chock a block solid! Cleaned them up and the run like a champ! Like how much trash can get packed into an engine!

That's pretty much normal for any of the air cooled engines if you don't clean them out occasionally.

Also saying that all a Kohler is good for is being a mouse nest is pretty danged ignorant in my book. It all depends on which model you are talking about.

I'll put the K482 and K532 engines I have in my Bolens tractors up against any other 18 and 20 Hp engines made.

The same thing goes for all engine brands. They had their winners and they had their losers.

Thanks Bill, keep you in mind. I didn't pay much for the 18 hp kohler. I bought it because it has an adjustable carb. My 20 hp doesn't. I leaned my 20 hp kohler in the summer with E20. Winter I need to use E10 to get it to run right. Even my Jubilee and Farmall C. Lean them down in summer, richen up in winter to make power.

I paid $50 for a new coil for the 20 hp. Still having gremlins. When I turn the key off it only kills one coil. After 3 attempts to fix the issue, I going to use the 2 used coils off the 18 hp. Run a ground wire to each coil and new kill wire. Short out coils with a different switch. If that doesn't work, I'll just turn off the power to solenoid and let carb run out of gas.

Not only did the blown kohler have a mouse nest, all the cooling fins were backed solid with dirt. I think the dirt killed the motor, then a mouse set up residence. Not sure.

Well when the pressed on crank gear splits like this one did at
1700 hrs, it's only good for a mouse house, get it!

So that particular engine is only good for a mouse nest.

Show me where ALL of them do the same thing.

When you can do that, I'll agree with the 'mouse nest' statement.

Mouse nest seems to be the main topic, not the fact that the motor went south because the cooling fins were totally choked with dirt.

The mouse nest had to been built long after engine was removed from mower. Proof, some of the grass is in the cooling fan on the flywheel. It wouldn't be there is the engine was ever turned over.

I posted this to warn people to check the cooling fins on any cub cadet mower. Notice the hours on oil filter are very small, 241.

I'm always amazed how this post went sideways over a mouse nest.

I have 17 Bolens tractors and one Cub Cadet tractor with a mix of Wisconsin, Briggs, Kohler and Tecumseh engines.

I know all about mouse nests :D :D :D

They aren't specific to Cub Cadets and/or Kohlers.

If it's air cooled and shrouded, it's going to have grass clipping and/or mouse nest build up, and you have to know the check for them.
