engine noise

Here is something I didn,t know was actually in vehicles now. I just went WAHHaaa??
Take a look at this web sight. "The Washington Post" the newspaper sight and look for "America's best selling cars and trucks are built on lies;the rise of fake engine noise." Is nothing sacred anymore?

A modern day version of the 20's-50's exhaust cut out ,LOL. Without it, that new 4 cyl Mustang would sound like an old Pinto instead of a 428 CJ :)

Shows you just how good todays gas engines are :)

And wouldn't it be easy to program that same fake engine sound to deteriorate to a less desirable slap, rattle and knock... Time to trade it in!

No, they would never stoop that low, trust them!

You just figured that out?

Even before the advent of doing it electronically, it was done by tuning the intake system and exhaust.

Back in '93, I bought the mother of my children a new Grand Prix, and the intake and exhaust systems on the little V6 were tuned to make "powerful" noise, without too many actual ponies to back it up.

Can't complain too much, though, it was a pretty good car and the wife's little bro's girlfriend is still driving it.

When I was a kid, my parents told me kids are to be seen not heard. Today kids definitely want to be seen and heard. Selfies on their facebook. Some are suffering from Narcissistic personality disorder. The world is all about ME, ME, ME. LOOK AT ME NOW. For many years some people would remove the guts from their motorcycle mufflers just to get attention. So, it's no surprise people want to be seen and heard in their cars, just an example of getting attention. For years now, kids would put a different muffler on their little 4 cylinder cars so they would sound like a race car. It' all about ME.

One afternoon last summer I just had to "pace" a new Camarro that was slowly going by me on the interstate in heavy traffic. The exhaust sounded so sweet, it was like the chambered exhaust of the GM muscle cars of the seventies. I saw one at the gas station a few days later and asked the driver about it. She had just barely got the system put on, so I looked underneath. It was a very elaborate system with Wyes and Xs and dead end pipes that she spent a lot on.

How is engine noise piped into the radio INSIDE the car a "ME ME ME LOOK AT ME NOW" thing? People outside can't hear it!

The noise is for the DRIVER. People have complained about "noise pollution" so the manufacturers are making quieter cars. Plus the interior is so well insulated and sealed you can't hear anything going on outside.

People will actually NOT buy a vehicle because it "doesn't sound right" or is "too quiet."

I remember kids in the 50's installing cut-outs so when they drag raced they could by-pass muffler.

Is that really much different than the straight pipes and glass pack mufflers of years ago? I like the idea that now the noise stays inside the vehicle instead of reverberating around the area and rattling the windows on nearby buildings. Harley riders might also be a potential market in areas that enforce noise restrictions.

I have driven the 15 f150 and the engine sound that is piped in is not at all loud and quite pleasing. My 2011 ecoboost is very quiet with almost no engine noise in the cabin. I think I like the sound of the 2015 better. There is no increased sound from the exhaust. My 2015 is supposed to be delivered mid. March. Chuck

If sound doesn't matter why do people make
their motorcycles louder, put glass packs on
trucks, special mufflers on 4 cylinder Honda to
make it sound like a race car, loud boom boxes if
it isn't all about calling attention to
themselves? So electronically enhancing the sound
of an engine makes perfect scene. Just wait
someone will figure out how to connect it to
their stereo to attract attention. Like it or
not, we are living in the “look at me now
society”.
