Stock At Large

Saw a old stock at large sign on a very rural road today; and it got me to thinking about days gone past.
While my state did away with free range laws years ago;
I can remember the state highway I use to get to my house having a cattle guards in it up until the mid to late 80"s
The area I live in use to have fence out law.

I would imagine there are still places out west that are free range with fence out laws but have not seen any east of Texas in many years.

So can any of you guys remember cattle guards in the highway or still live in fence out areas.

Here in Colorado we still have open range (Fence out law) but most road ways are fenced. But the cow does have the right-a-way if they are out.

Here in Nevada, Highways are fenced, still have Cattle Guards on the Secondary Highways & on Main Highways at the edges of rural Towns. Still people occasionally hitting Burros, Horses, Cattle, & Deer, usually at night when they're harder to see.

I heard that President Clinton laid off a bunch of them cattle guards when he was in office....

The deer in SC consider it to be an open range state. Domestic livestock have to be fenced in.
Sometime around 1900 Fence laws were enacted in SC. Poor people didn't like it, said it favored the large scale farmers of the day, otherwise known as the "rich" planters.

Several Parishes still have open range at least in some wards, most of my Parish voted for a stock law 30 years ago but there is still two wards that don't have a stock law, they don't have any paved roads either. I was traveling the California coast road highway 1 north in 2007 and somewhere either before or after crossing the Russian River we crossed a cattle gap and there were cattle grazing on the side of the road, never expected that in a million years.

In Wisconsin you have to keep your livestock fenced in. If one of your animals gets on the road, and gets hit, the farmer has to pay all damages.

In Illinois we have fence laws. My neighbor just got aressted for livestock running at large. He got out on $30000 bond but is looking at 3-5 years in prison. USDA showed up at his place while he was in jail and hauled his livestock to sale barn and sold them. This has been going on for 20 yrs cows and pigs out on road and fields daily, some other neighbors have been shooting his pigs in their fields cause he won't fix his fences, he's been arrested several times for this, county police finally had enough and hauled him off and USDA hauled off livestock, sherrif said he'll never own a animal again in his life

I had forgotten about that dustup with Clinton thinking that cattle guards were paid federal employees - thank you for the chuckle!

There was one guy who lived by a RR tracks that sold horses,etc . He had some cattle running loose damaging my corn but never got a cent out of it.Should have hauled one of those cows of to a butcher.Seemed everybody along that RR tracks there was half nuts! lol
