Termite repellant

I was working on my pole barn yesterday that I have been building for the past year. It's a slow process by yourself...lol. I was walking on a board that was nailed to poles about 9' in the air. Needless to say I was driving some nails in above my head and then I was on the ground. The board I was on came out of a pole with no warning because termites had eat into it. I'm not fond of falling 9' again...lol. What is a good repellant for termites?

Termites aren't that difficult to run off. Usually what happens is they eat everything up and you don't know they are there to spray for. Almost any insecticide will move termites on their way. It may take frequent treatment with the over the counter stuff. If you want to spend the money you might get some Termidor SC and spray around the building and ground. I normally use Spectracide and spray more frequent.

Borite or any product that contains broridic acid. You can ether spray with garden sprayer or if you can make some trough dip the boards. I use these products on log cabins all the time before I stian them works well for termites never had one get them. I usually get my products from Schroeder log cabin supply. NOTE that stuff will give you really really really bad heart burn FYI. Limit your exposure won't kill you though been covered in stuff many times.

Funny that you bring this up. This morning before Sunday School, Pastor, Leland and I were setting in the back of the church visiting when the pastor looked at the pew I was setting on and said something is eating that pew. There was fresh sawdust on the floor next to the pew and a cut about 1/16th" wide and 8 or 10 inches long going up the side of the pew. Looks like we need to call the exterminator.

Bifenthrin is very cheap and effective if used as per instructions. I still have Chlordane and Dursban on hand if needed.

Working on shed for only a year
Wood has no ground contact; in fact it is 9' in the air
And the board is so badly eaten by termites it broke

Sorry but that just does not add up.

Subterranean termites need ground contact; but can eat a building to the ground in short order.
Dry wood termites do not need ground contact but they usually work slowly.

Are you sure you are using good; not infested wood.

Did you see any small pellets that dry wood termites make under where the board was.

A Borate product will kill dry wood termites if you can get it to them; but we really need to know what type of termite you have to recommend treatment.

Termites in my area fly, and can get started well above ground. My house if full of the things. About the only way to get completely rid of termites is have the house tented, and poison gas pumped in. I have a shead I sprayed the infected area with diesel fuel. Don't know if it did any good. It made me feel like I did something. Every house sold in southern calif needs to have a termite inspection before a sale can happen. Like bats, I hate the things. Stan

Spectracide, sold at TSC. They have it by quart concentrate, gallon ready to apply and also have the stakes. Just did this a few months ago at the neighbor's house. Had called the Orkin man but they wanted $1000 to do an inspection/initial treatment. Asked what chemical they use, he said Spectracide.

No the board did not break. The board pulled out of the pole it was nailed to because the pole which is concreted in the ground had been eaten by termites.

Termidor is what the commercial guys use around here. I have seen it advertised on www. Was talking to a pest control business owner about checking my house since I had it installed about 8 years ago on a bad infestation and even though I haven't seen any new activity I thought I ought to get it done again.

His answer was that once it's in the soil the only way you can get rid of it is to get rid of the soil. Well he didn't realize it but, for the time being anyway, he talked himself out of a job.

Funny I should read this. My pest control people were just here about an hour ago to check my bait stations. After the initial cost ( about $1200) I pay them $125 to monitor and maintain the bait stations.

Dont know what they use, but the house is surrounded by the green plastic baits drilled in the ground at about 20' intervals.

The basement of this house had termites so bad we had to gut it and even replace some of the support studs along one wall for the upstairt (split level home)

I do have some Chlordane left over, but i let the professionals handle it.

Ok so you do have Subterranean termites.

There is 3 ways to treat them.

1) Bait stations. This is best left to the pros.

2) Repellent ground sprays. (old way of treating termites) These are OK but they only repel termites; do not kill them. If you leave 1 inch of untreated area they will find a way in. Some examples of these sprays are....

3)Non repellent ground sprays. This is the modern way of killing termites. It does not repel them. They tunnel into the treated area and it kills them. It will also kill termites in wood when they return to the soil for water. Some examples of these sprays are...

4) Spray directly on the wood. Some examples of this are......

If it were me; I would use either Premise (imidacloprid) Termidor (fipronil) or Phantom (chlorfenapyr) to spray the ground around the building and Bora-care (Disodium Octaborate
Tetrahydrate) to treat the wood.
